Just down the street from City Park on 4840 Bienville St., G’s Pizza will be helping us with the Pizza Poetry Project this year. Get a pizza from them on April 17th and you’ll receive the gift of poetry on the pizza box, plus 10% of the proceeds will go to fund Big Class!

Ricky Ricard, Jr., manager of G’s Pizza, gave us his insights on our pizzaria interview questions.

What’s more important to you, cheese on pizza or rhyming in poetry?

I don’t know, I’m kind of old-school, I like poetry that rhymes.

You can deal with a pizza without any cheese on it?

Yes, I can.

If you were stuck on a desert island with an endless supply of pizza, what toppings would you bring?

Oh. I would have to have Italian sausage, ground beef, bacon, roasted garlic, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and fresh mozzarella.

That’s a comforting pizza to be stuck with for the rest of your life.

Yes, it is. I could--I could live off of that.

What interest do you have in poetry? Do you have any particular favorite poets or poems?

I used to be very interested in poetry. I used to write a lot of in when I was young. I haven’t been into it in years. I can’t say I have a favorite poet as of right now, but I would love get back into it. Maybe that’s something I oughta get back in to. But I support it, and I love anything that has anything to do with it. Especially any poetry project that is centered around giving kids an avenue or a venue to release emotions and thoughts. You know, so many kids have so many things bottled up, and if they had a free form of expression, especially something as beautiful as poetry, that is a beautiful thing.

What about this project attracted you getting involved, in terms of putting it on pizza boxes?

Poetry and kids. Poetry and kids. Man, I would put it on a billboard. To help kids and to help expose the diminishing light of poetry. When I was a kid you had so many events centered around poetry, and you just don’t see that anymore. So to have an event that is really based on poetry, that actually has the name “poetry,” not that has poetry as a side-line item, that is phenomenal. And especially to get kids in it is even more of a beautiful thing. If you can plant a seed young, then maybe that will grow, and stand quite a long time of endurance.

What should people order from G’s Pizza on PIzza Poetry Day?

G’s Pizza, from now until October, is the number one pizza champion in the state of Louisiana. That’s our trophy over there. We won first place in October in the state of Lousiana for the best pizza, and we won with our margherita pizza. So it is right now the reigning number one pizza of Louisiana, and this is the spot that they got it. We just came back from the national pizza convention in Las Vegas, and learned a lot of new tricks out there. So I would definitely say you have to try our margherita pizza. The City Park Salad is awesome, and the G’s Burger is famous. It is a half-pound, freshly made burger, with caramelized onions, a special G’s house sauce, a four cheese blend of mozzarella, american, feta, and goat, a sunny side egg on top of it, lettuce and tomatoes. It is delicious.

That’s a mountain.

Weekly Mouthful: So Many Dynamos

Often times, different media outlets will attempt to differentiate their video content by adding a weird n’ wacky spin so people will say, “Hey! They’re doin’ something different!” Well, we’re no different. This is The Weekly Mouthful, a video series featuring interviews with artists as they eat pizza.

So Many Dynamos at Pygmalion 2012

It’s an honor and a privilege to have a band like So Many Dynamos as our first non-local artist to be featured on The Weekly Mouthful. Before a ridiculous set to which I danced my weight away in sweat, a few of us sat down with So Many Dynamos and a large cheese pizza, and we discussed puffin stealing, whether or not Justin Bieber can shred, and the progress the band is making on its forthcoming LP. Sadly, the percussionist also kills a spider.
