Yes, those exactly - like #spoilers, #dragon age, and #inquisition. When using tags, addons like Tumblr Savior can recognize blacklisted keywords and hide them from the dashboard. It's useful if you want to avoid spoilers, hide things you're not interested in, and keep away from material that might be harmful or triggering. It's a good way of filtering what shows up for you, but like I said, it only works if people use tags in their posts.
