(3) A monumental Archaic mortuary pithos from the area of Mon Repos on display outside of the villa. (4) Anathyrosis on the underside of a fallen column from the sixth century temple is visible, as is the footprint of its former resting place amongst the mosses and lichens on the stylobate. (5) A Doric capital and a piece of a monolithic column south of the cella wall at the site of the sixth-century temple.

so we all know about how pandora opened the box containing all the evils in the world, right? except originally, the story actually referred to a large jar, or “pithos”. and suffering is called “pathos” in greek. all of this leads to one terrible conclusion: one of the defining stories of classical greek mythology was probably just an excuse to say “a pithos of pathos” and somewhere, hesiod’s ghost is laughing at us.
