Okay listen. The first EQG movie would have been so much better if Twilight and Sunset used to know each other.Â
just. Twilight and Sunset being Celestiaâs proteges as fillies. They didnât call themselves friends, but Twilightâs nickname of âStar Study-Buddiesâ implied enough. And really, who could blame her? They were the only ones that knew the responsibilities of being their Princessâ pupil. But time passes. Things change. One day, Sunset finds the mirror portal and sees how powerful she could become. She could be an alicorn, why is Celestia wasting her time with something as trivial as friendship lessons? So she tries to advance her studies, tries to sneak into libraries after hours, tries to learn as much magic as she can get her hooves on; but Celestia keeps on holding her back. And in frustration and anger and hurt, Sunset runs away to the human world and doesnât look back.
Twilight takes the loss hard. They used to spend so much time together, even if most of it was just magic studies. And now her closest peer ran away without saying goodbye to anyone? So Twilight starts to build walls around her heart, so no one nothing can hurt her like that ever again. After a year, the only people she truly talks to are either family or teachers. And she convinces herself itâs all she needs.
But then, thereâs the summer sun celebration, and Applejack and Rarity and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie and real, true friends. and Twilight canât remember how she lived life without friendship, without them. And even with villians threatening Equestria from time to time, itâs the happiest sheâs been in years. And in some ways, it almost feels like being a filly again, with sleepovers and spa days, going to races and parties, and just truly feeling alive.
Later, in what feels like eternity and a blink of an eye, Twilight and her friends are invited to stay at the Crystal Empire. And itâs wonderful. After the long day Twilight goes to bed, warm and content.Â
But in the night, thereâs tapping of hooves on crystal. Thereâs a creak of a door and a rustle of a cloak. Thereâs the faint sound of magic as a crown is swapped out. And twilight jolts awake, sees an intruder leaving her room with the Element of Magic, and gives chase. Itâs not long before others wake and start to run after the two. The thief briefly blinds Twilight with their cloak, and she blindly lunges to grab onto the thief. The first thing Twilight sees is her Element fly into a mirror and disappear in it. The second thing she sees is-
And they pause, looking at their former friend peer for the first time in what feels like a decade.
Sunset comes to her senses and gallops to the mirror, before turning back. âSee you later, Sparkle.â And she jumps into the mirror, leaving nothing but a cloak, a fake crown, and an old knot of purple and orange loose ends tangled with a string of hurt.Â
After getting over her shock, Twilight knows she has to follow her. And when she goes through the mirror, she has a goal and what she knows is an ill-fated dream running through her head. Her goal: to find the Element of Magic and take it back to Equestria. Her dream: to somehow, despite all the reasons not to, and all the walls in front of her, connect with Sunset again.
