in all seriousness tho, i’m just saying this current mindset is not what we started out with back in the day. it’s evolved, and that’s okay, but unlike with our hair we cant bleach our roots

i’ll give a history lesson the way me and my dear friend ash wednesday remember it. bear with me bc i’m bad at these things lol

emo was derivative of 90s punk and tripp goth (don’t get me started on the different types of goth lol just… you know what i mean by this phrase), but more angsty, albeit it was subversive because society as a whole was not as into the “discussing negative emotions” thing. emo is short for “emotions” in itself lol. (and i mean… nu metal music was angsty too tho lol.) it was less abrasive. more internalized. as ash put it, melancholic, more “cut my wrists and black my eyes”

scene was derivative of emo, but it was like the little sibling. it was somehow more bubbly, but at the same time more pissed the fuck off, and wanting to grow up too fast. it was heavily centered around the music scene, therefore the crowds that would go shows were referred to as “scene kids.” according to ash, the different flavor of scene typically was based on the music you listened to. the most common kind was hardcore, based on post hardcore music. then there was what a lot of people today are associating with it, the more vibrant kawaii kind. when icons like hello kitty and gloomy bear were claimed, things really got rolling. kawaii kind was the kind with the kandi, the nightcore, teh omgz l0l so RANDOM XD 

from there there things like retro scene, based on chiptune and retro gaming nostalgia, and crunk scene based on well. crunk. came about. lots of shutter shades in that one lol

no matter the flavor, scene was still at its core about being hardxcore. as ash said, more “my teen angst has a body count.” razor blades were a holdover from emo symbolism, once used to denote themes of self-harm, now used to promote violence and self defense. (”when you’re running your mouth our razorblades come out.”) guns were brought into the mix, part of crunk that became as mainstream as it could get for scene. (my myspace url was porcelainpistol, hence my current url.) brass knuckles became a HUGE thing, a “meet me in the (mosh) pit” deal

throughout all, alt subculture also held a heavy hand. body mods were also huge. (”is that a new tattoo? did that piercing fucking hurt?”) but there was also the persona of keeping others in their place, and at a distance. (”no jk jk jk lolololol… we’re not falling in love, we’re just falling apart”)

regarding innocence, uhh. while things like hello kitty and pikachu were considered childish, that was part of the point, it was to…. pervert something innocent, not reclaim it. hello kitty with a gun and i think that suffices ┐(◕◡◕)┌

promiscuity was a thing too. like… there was your soulmate, and once found you stayed with them. but if you were single? it was on in attempts to find that soulmate lol. ash reminded me there were things like “whore trains” on myspace, and people REVELED in being referred to that way. (the c word was also a big one)

Yeah I don’t know why nu-emo focuses so much on the cutesy stuff when we legit thought we were being edgy bastards lol (at least imo)

i don’t even know the blog you tagged but neat, i have someone new to follow <3 by the looks of it, they didn’t know me before you tagged me either but i guess they do now lol

sometimes ppl can see a good post on twitter and separately think it’s good and cap and post it without one stealing from the other. we just both thought the tweet was relevant to our blogs and we both happened to post it. the original tweet has 27k retweets, and i’ve personally seen it also posted on facebook. with that many numbers there’s possibly a lot of blogs, especially scemo and mcr focused, that may have reposted this tweet lol. case in point: this was a mere coincidence. here’s a cap for reference on the amount of retweets
