Back to bugs! This is Battus philenor, the Pipevine Swallowtail. This is one of many we found in PA on our trip. As it’s common name suggests, it feeds on Pipevine (Aristolochia). Sometimes this butterfly can become so numerous in gardens that the larvae will defoliate entire vines. They’re pretty spectacular though. The best part? They feel like gummies. I'm awestruck by the series of changes these incredible butterflies experience so it was challenging to choose which phase of the life cycle to feature in this painting. In the end I decided to paint them aggregating, mating, and laying eggs on their pipevine host plant. I wanted to highlight their variable iridescent blue wings and super fuzzy abdomens which make this subspecies unique (Battus philenor hirsuta).
