I was just watching Frasier (the original from the 2000s) and I wonder if PB took some elements from Lilith (who also appears in Cheers) when creating Piper. Despite them having differences (Piper apparently has Asian background and Lilith apparently doesn't, I don't know much about the character tbh), I can see a resemblance in the hair, the face/body shape, the style, even the personality and how the rest of the characters in the story see them!
