Happy Birthday, Katie-Kat!:
Today was Pidge's birthday. And Henry (being the amazing boyfriend that he is) wanted to make sure that it was absolutely perfect. Last night, when she had fallen asleep, Henry placed a timed recorded birthday message to play once Pidge had woken up. She was kind of slow and sluggish this morning, but then again, she is like that every morning. But today, Pidge seemed more... Depressed. She hardly even touched the Space Pancakes Henry and Hunk had made special, just for her birthday. "I'm just not hungry." She said. Pidge spent the entire day in her little lab that she tends to hide away in. ~~~~ "Pidgeon?" Henry took two steps into her workshop. He saw a blueish white glow and heard what sounded like soft sobbing coming from one side of the room. "...Pidge?" Henry hesitantly made his way over. Pidge was sitting on the floor, knees to her chest, back up against a green beanbag chair shaped like a lion paw print. In front of her lay her laptop, it was displaying a photo of four people at the beach, smiling and laughing around a sandcastle. The person in the bottom left corner was definitely Pidge, but it didnt look like Pidge. This girl's hair was longer. She looked a little younger. And she didn't have glasses. The doofy looking kid in the top right was obviously her brother, Matt. Which meant the other two people in the photo were their parents. "Oh...." Henry understood. He finally understood. "This was my last birthday that was spent together. As a family. Before the Kerberos mission. Before... Before...." Pidge started to cry again. Henry wrapped an arm around her and rested his head on her's. "I understand." He whispered. "What?!" Pidge pushed him away. "No you don't! There's no way you could understand!" She stood up. "Pidge, what are you talking about? I abandoned my life on Earth, my friends, my school, my home, my FAMILY, just so I could be with you! So what do you mean 'I don't understand'?" "You didn't have your family ripped away from you! You didn't have their disappearances kept a secret from you! You didn't have to come all the way out to Space just to have any chance of finding them! So that's what I mean, Henry!" Pidge was crying even harder now. After a long pause of no one saying anything, Pidge broke the silence. "I can't talk to you right now. I want you out." She tried to push Henry out, but she wasn't strong enough. "PLEASE WALK!" Henry walked out and the door immediately slid closed behind him. Out of frustration, he kicked the door. ****** Pidge slid her back down door, sitting on the floor. Letting the hot tears run down her cheeks. 'I need to break something.' She thought. She scanned her lab for something she could throw. Her gaze landed on the gray recording device on one of the tables. Pidge rushed over and snatched it up. She stared at the thing. She studied the gray metal. The orange side buttons. The dark screen. Henry's birthday message was on here. The same birthday message he recorded last night and left for Pidge in her bedroom. Pidge inhaled and let out a short scream as she chucked the thing at the opposite wall. She threw herself on the beanbag chair. Henry's birthday message started playing from the recording device. "Good morning and happy birthday, Pidge! I hope your dreams were pleasant. Fifteen is an important birthday, so I want this to be perfect for my beautifully perfect girl. See you soon, Katie-Kat." The recording ended. And started playing again from the beginning. Pidge hadn't really been paying much attention to it this morning when it played the first time. But now, actually listening to it, she realized what she needed to do. ~~~~ Pidge was tearing down the hallways of the Castle of Lions, looking for Henry. "Hey, Squidge." Lance waved. "NOT NOW LANCE!" Pidge shouted as she zipped past. "O...Kay..." And Lance kept walking. ~~~~~ After finding out her boyfriend's location from Shiro and Coran, Pidge ran to the control room. Henry was standing in front of one of the window walls, watching the vast void of Space. "I'm sorry." She said softly. "What?" But before Henry could fully turn around, Pidge had already tackled him to the floor in a hug. "I'm sorry." She repeated. "I never realized how much you cared, and how patient you are. And how much you have given up just to be here." He placed a hand on her back. And with a smile, said, "That's great, Pidgeon, but you're crushing my lungs." "Oh!" She quickly loosened her grip. "Sorry." ~~~~~ They were sitting on beanbag chairs (hopefully Shiro wouldn't mind Henry borrowing his), and staring off into the beautiful view of space while drinking what was essentially the Altean equivalent of hot cocoa. It tasted like toothpaste and stale froot loops left to float in hot chocolate. But Pidge didn't mind. Henry turned to her. "I will follow you to the farthest reaches of the universe, Katie Holt." And for what happened next, it was like her body was on autopilot. Her mind was telling her body to stop. But her body wasn't listening. She kissed him. Like a real, actual kiss. Not like the cute little pecks on the cheek they give each other in passing. No. This was different. When they broke the kiss, Henry looked her in the eyes and said, "Happy birthday, Katie-Kat." So maybe this wasn't a perfect birthday, but it was pretty perfect to her.
