In my last post I mentioned I may need your help to surprise my boyfriend. We both love to cook and we both have our specialties. I cook lots of Romanian, Italian and Spanish dishes (to the best of my abilities, not claiming any kind of title, I just love to do it) and he does lots of French, Asian and Middle Eastern dishes. When we travel sometimes we go to classes so that we can learn all the traditional ways to deal with ingredients, tastes and authenticity. But most of the time we just google recipes and we try them for fun. Sometimes we find little gems, like I did last week with Crushed Cucumber Salad (yuuuuum), sometimes we don't. But here is where I need your help. Can you send me one recipe that is traditional to your country/region that you know would be easy to reproduce? One or more, it doesn't matter 😋 Even if it's just a simple and new way of cooking rice, or making a sauce! And I especially encourage you to share your favorite dishes if you have any. There is so much delicious food in this world, so let's shaaaare! PS - I am so surprised by how well this paper is taking water, and it's the cheapest handmade watercolor paper I could find... whaaat? As I mentioned in my last post, I'm going with a Cherry blossom theme this month... to honor my boyfriends birthday 😊🌸 One reason he loves Cherry blossoms is because they are so present in Asian art and culture, especially Japanese... and my boyfriend is in love with Asia. I'm in love with this cheap Khadi paper sketchbook, did I mention that already? 😋 My boyfriend loves Cherry branches, so I thought why not indulge him? He's been planning and scheming every detail related to our new house and I can't help but admit how lucky I am to have a partner so engaged in our future and in our well being. It's also new for me to let go of control, ever since I was 19 I was pretty much on my own and taking my own decisions... and not really sharing much of my burdens with anyone. The downside of all that freedom was that I was alone almost always when I was going through a rough patch. Now he's here, he doesn't always know what to say or do, but you see how much he cares and it makes whatever is putting you down less important and less painful. So, to honor his beautiful influence on me, and his birth month, I'm going to go with a Cherry theme for August. Thank you for allowing me to effuse some more unusual and negative feelings with my last post. Now back to our regular stuff... or not. The thing is Sometimes when something has been sitting and concocting in your mind for a while, when you finally say it out loud it produces this powerful echo that just slams every door and window shut and leaves you alone with only yourself and the sound of your own self pity. It's not a great feeling, but it's necessary. Because it allows you to shut the whole world up and focus on your inner rhythm. Maybe this resonates with you too, Maybe it doesn't, Maybe we should all just give up on the things that preoccupy us for a few seconds. And take a deep breath. Late night painting alert! So I was sitting in my bed, trying to sleep for the last 2 hours, and it just wasn't happening. I went to my little "studio" in the attick, I put the lights on, I turned on my laptop and I looked for a positive distraction that would keep me from falling into a deep pit of negative and repetitive thoughts. The first sketch I made of this little lady made me smile, because she was smiling. So I kept going till I realized it was 2 hours later and I was almost finished. I went to bed and slept like a baby. The next day I just added the details and a pinch of metallic and voila! The recipe for kicking insomnia's a*s for good! And you, what do you do on a sleepless night? Drink warm milk? Watch a relaxing ASMR video? Read a book? Listen to relaxing music? Would love to hear about your routines. More Khadi paperrrrr. This time it's a cheap 150gsm sketchbook which I didn't know what to do with, but I found it's super useful to do quick watercolors, either as study or just as fun experiment. It's funny how good this paper actually is, although it's meant to be used with only a few layers. This doesn't bother me as I am not looking to spend hours and hours on these paintings. Anyway, I'm discovering the pleasure of being able to finish a painting in one sitting. For anyone who likes working in watercolor, you know that you always have to wait in between washes so that your paper dries and that's what trained my patience and also annoyed me at times as I would have to do something else in between washes (yes I am THAT kind of person) so I would start sketching, sometimes get carried away... and that's how you end up with unfinished work to be carried for days or even weeks at times, and frankly I hate it when I see my works all lined up, waiting for those important decisions that I was scared to take in a moment where I was tired because of all the different pieces I was working on in parallel. So this sketchbook comes as a blessing. And you, how do you deal with having to wait between washes? Do you do anything else? Do you just wait?
