Just Because! #01. 「On your marks!」 (“On your marks!”)
GAMERS! - Episode 12
Discussion of spoilers under the cut…
So I’m of two minds about this episode. As a standalone, it was one of my favorite episodes of the series, if not outright favorite. Aguri was brilliant (big surprise) with her constantly poking holes in Keita, Karen and Chiaki’s identity as gamers and pointing out all of the absurdities gamers are put through by developers. I swear that someone on the writing staff must be a fan of Jim Sterling because a lot of the points she made were ones he frequently makes in his videos regarding DLC and price bullshit.
However, as a season (series???) finale, I feel like it failed horribly. It didn’t have any of the sort of gravitas that a finale has. None of the conflicts that existed were escalated or really resolved. It just felt like any other regular episode. All we really got were Keita/Karen and Tasuku/Aguri being adorable when they’d break the no flirting rule. Honestly, last week’s episode at the amusment park felt more like a finale than this one did. Chiaki had to come to grips with her feelings for Keita while the two canon couples had some minor issues but they got resolved by the end and there looked to be a happy ending for them all. Hell, there was even a non-traditional end credits.
Also, I’m no prude when it comes to fanservice in media. But was that scene in the hot tub really necessary, Pine Jam? It wouldn’t have been so bad if that just happened to be the setting and the nudity of the girls wasn’t focused on at all. But they just…kept…drawing attention to it. I found it more hilarious than titilating because of how blatant and shameless it was. You made it this far without scenes like that. Let’s not turn into Senran Kagura all of a sudden.
Also, Chaiaki, I love you but what was the deal with that whole tangent about fish DLC?
Overall, this show has been a very welcome surprise and I’ve really enjoyed getting to watch it over the past few months. And with how ambiguous the last episode was, I’m hoping that means that there’s more to come in the future. Because there definitely wasn’t resolution of any kind at the end. It feels like there’s more stories that can be told with these five. I really hope that’s the case because I love this show a lot and don’t want it to already be over. Especially if that was their idea of a grand finale.
