Some images work in isolation, others need to be grouped. This is the only real way to see the iconic work of the Bechers, a Düsseldorf husband and wife team who photographed old industrial buildings in Europe. Nicholas Nixon's series, The Brown Sisters, has grown and grown through the tears, not only in number (as he shoots a new image each year) but in fame. For the past two or three years I've encountered it in various shows, a monograph, and feature articles online and in print. I may have even seen it a few years ago at Pier 24. Coffee shop book. Pier 24 is the best kind of photography gallery. It's in San Francisco and exists because of the passion for photography as an art by its wealthy benefactors. It's free to get in and the photography is always good, many times excellent, sometimes astonishing. They limit attendance through an online reservation system and do not have the tedious (sometimes immensely, unintentionally humorous) wall text labels that unavoidable try to shape your experience while you are trying to have it. Instead it is just you and the photographs to make of what you will, without crowds to distract you or push you along. Of course, this isn't a temple. Pier 24 publishes a gallery guide for each show (very inexpensive) which serves both to give you the artists names and image titles and dates and to offer the visitor a ready made set of visual notes of the show, though you are welcome to make your own images. #pier24 #pier24photography #art #photography #artphotography #artgallery #artmuseum #sanfrancisco #artcollector #artcurator #artlover
