Pasolini’s Pietà
My project examines the repetitive way that each piece is vandalized. There are certain predictable methods that each image is changed, whether it be by severing the dead Pasolini’s head from its body, blocking out his eyes, or executing an aggressive downward pull, as if the person was trying to take as much of Pasolini as they could. It proves that there is a systematic way that people are destroying these works, and that the reason for this vandalism is linked to vast, communal hatred based on homophobia, and the rejection of controversial religious, political, and cultural themes in Pasolini’s work.
The project is a photographic exploration of a street art series done by Ernest Pignon-Ernest. It was a wheat paste of Pier Pasolini, a highly controversial italian filmmaker who died under mysterious circumstances in 1975. The image has Pasolini holding his own dead body in an imitation of the Pietà, when Mary held a lifeless Jesus Christ. Even though his death was forty years ago, Pasolini is still hated by some Italians, as exhibited by the constant violent vandalization of his highly controversial image in Pignon-Ernest’s wheat-paste.
After a long absence, I put on a record of Bach, inhale the fragrant earth in the garden, I think again of poems and novels to be written and I return to the silence of the morning rain
