Transitions
Chào / Hi,
I hope this message finds you well as we approach the winter solstice and break.
I want to share that I'll be transitioning out of my role as Pie Ranch's Youth Organizing and Program Coordinator at Oceana High School at the end of this month and semester.
Thank you for your time, energy, and commitment in supporting OHS's food programs, our visions toward food access and justice, and my journey as an educator the last three years.
45 students have been part of our summer and afterschool paid HomeSlice internship;
Hundreds of students and counting have been part of field trips, in-class lessons, afterschool programming, entrepreneurial experiences like catering, pop-up markets, student-led fundraisers, and more;
A dozen alum have returned to continue to support the program in different ways;
OHS has been a home site for a total of 42 Pie Ranch CSA subscribers and their loved ones the last three years, growing every season. We reached our highest number ever this season with 20 shares;
Over 300 individuals and groups follow the garden online through social media;
The garden's expanded to a larger field, and last year was our first season growing with it and the new Agri-Science class dedicating study and time to its growth.
I've been reminded how important pedagogy and community are in my life. In addition to all the food we've grown, learned about, harvested, and been nourished by, I've experienced growth in people, especially the creative and bright youth I'm so grateful to have worked and built with.
I want to introduce Jennifer Chen, who'll be helping coordinate the Pie Ranch-OHS youth program partnership beginning in January.
Please check out the link to learn more about Jennifer.
While I'll be transitioning, the OHS garden and food programs will continue.
We're asking for your support this winter season and raising funds in this next week. Please consider joining us for lunch next Wednesday or pre-order OHS Garden gifts:

New Pie Ranch OHS Youth Coordinator: Jennifer Chen
Hi Everyone,
I'm excited to be entering this new position as the Youth Program Coordinator at Oceana High School! I look forward to getting to know everyone and wanted to start by giving you a little bit of information about myself. I grew up in Southern California and originally moved up to the area to attend UC Santa Cruz where I graduated with a degree in Community Studies. Since then I've worked doing direct service as well as program coordinating in various youth community organizations in Seattle. In Seattle, I also began my journey as a professional baker and have recently been able to combine my love of food with my passion for community through connecting with food justice organizations like Pie Ranch. I originally came to Pie Ranch as a volunteer because I see the importance of farming and food as a tool for growth, community and social change. I wanted to grow my own skills as well as connect with farmers that are prioritizing food justice and farm education. I'm looking forward to now continuing that journey by working with young people at Oceana who have similar goals and interests. I am truly inspired by what the team at OHS and Pie Ranch have been able to accomplish thus far and honored to be a part of it!
"Naftali Moed is a senior at UC Davis earning a degree in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning, with a minor in Landscape Restoration. He grew up in Pacifica, hiking and biking in nearby parklands and reading Bay Nature with his family. As a student at Oceana High School in Pacifica, Naftali continued his love affair with nature by interning for the Park Stewardship Program of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and helped found the school’s garden in partnership with the Conservancy and Pie Ranch, a nonprofit farm on the San Mateo coast. The garden is unique in that it grows both edible plants, to teach educate students about food sustainability issues, and native plants for ecosystem restoration. Naftali was later hired as a seasonal ranger at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area."
Props Naftali!

"I came from knowing zero about food and gardening," Oceana High School Senior c/o 2016 and Pie Ranch OHS HomeSlice Core Youth Organizer Angelina noted, "to being an advocate for food justice. Basically that means that everyone should have access to the type of the food that they want. Fast food is cheap because it is the most subsidized thing. But if we all turned toward organic food and showed that we have an interest in it, that would be subsidized and we would have cheaper organic food." (September 29th, 2015, San Jose Mercury News / Pacifica Tribune)
Props Angelina!
