DE-GREEN GIFS in photopea
— a coloring tutorial by kai at @photopeablr
howdy everyone! i come bearing another gift of a tutorial, as i’ve seen people run into this problem many times of giffing subjects being... incredibly difficult to de-green.
this tutorial requires:
photopea (free online photoshop)
basic giffing knowledge (check out our gif tutorials tag if you need to!)
with all that out of the way, let’s begin!
so first thing’s first, we need to get our gif loaded into photopea for us to start with. here’s a screenshot of my gif after i loaded in all the frames and cropped it to the size i wanted (540x400):
from here, we can start coloring! for those of you who haven’t read my coloring tutorial from a couple years ago, my method is more or less very similar to how it was back then. i still do the layer > adjustment layer > brightening/contrast step (though for this gif, i changed the opacity of the layer to 30%) and the layer > adjustment layer > levels, which i have set to these numbers in the pop up:
and doing all of that leaves us with our gif looking like this:
(i know the difference is very minimal but this tutorial is an entire process, give it a minute lol)
but now we get to the fun part: getting rid of that damn green filter.
in my original coloring tutorial, i used a channel mixer layer because i was following a method similar to this tutorial. while that tutorial is great for yellow-tinted scenes (i still use that method to this day), over the years, i realized that it wasn’t as great for green-tinted gifs. this is how i started to play around with another adjustment layer known as color balance.
color balance does exactly what it sounds like it does: it balances the colors of your gif. since we’re trying to balance out all the green that’s happening in this gif, it makes sense to use this adjustment layer. go to layer > adjustment layer > color balance (visual below):
and you’ll get a pop up similar to the channel mixer adjustment layer, but just a bit different. this part of the tutorial requires for you to play around with this adjustment layer—the settings that you are going to use for any gif you make are gonna be different no matter what you’re giffing, so play around with the different settings to see how they mess with the colors of your gif until you get something that neutralizes the green for the gif you’re working with. for my gif here, these are the settings i used for the shadows, midtones, and highlights:
and in doing so, now my gif looks like this (with a before/after):
we’re only three adjustment layers in and it’s already MUCH better than what we had. color balance tends to do most of the work for us in getting the green filter out, so now we can do the rest of our coloring process (whatever that looks like for you) to finish the gif. here is the fully colored + sharpened gif:
and that’s it! a simple tutorial, but it’s immensely useful when giffing with weird green-toned scenes.
a couple things before i stop this tutorial: in some cases, sometimes you’ll need to combine a color balance layer with a channel mixer layer, but (at least in my gif experience) that’s few and far between. color balance is more or less the only layer i really need to use when trying to get rid of green tones, but sometimes scenes need a little extra touches with the channel mixer layer to help neutralize the gif a bit more so it’s easier to color later on in your coloring process. but, again, those are few and far between.
no matter what you’re giffing, color balance is a great base layer that you can build off of with other adjustment layers and should really help out in making that gross green filter go away!

Would you ever share your blending process? It looks amazing!
Of course!!! I'm always happy to help!!! (Also, thank you for saying so 💖💖💖💖)
The tutorial below will show you how to make this gif!
So first you have to open your gifs in photopea and make sure they're the same number of frames.
Once both of your gifs are made and have the same number of frames, you'll go into the second gif and right click on it and pick the 'duplicate into' option, where you'll choose to duplicate it into your first gif.
Once you have them together in the same place, you'll change the blending style (which is the dropdown menu next to opacity) from 'pass through' to 'lighten' for both gifs. This step isn't technically required, but it helps you visualize how you want to place your gifs easier.
In order to move your gifs to where you want them to be, you have to select all the frames of your gif (otherwise you'll only end up moving one frame). You can do this by clicking on the first frame, then hold down the shift key while you select the last frame. Then you're free to move both gifs to where you want them!
Once you have your gifs where you want them, now comes the blending! Click on the raster mask option, which I've circled.
Next, you're going to get a brush. It's best to turn the hardness down, because then you're won't be as, well, hard lol. With a soft brush, it's easier to blend more naturally. And use whatever size you want.
With the raster mask, to erase what you don't want in your gif, like the harsh lines and things blocking parts of your other gif or whatever, you want to turn the color to black. Then, if you erase too much, you can change the color to white in order to add it back in!
One more thing about the raster mask, since you'll be adding it both gifs. Whatever part of the gif you want to erase make sure you're erasing the part from the gif that mask is applied to.
If that's confusing, what I mean is: I have my gifs labelled 'joey 1' & 'joey 2'. Joey 1 is the gif on the right and Joey 2 is the gif on the left. So, if I want to have more of the Joey 2 gif in my blended gif, I have to erase the parts of Joey 1 from the mask applied to Joey 1. (Hopefully that makes sense!)
Once you're satisfied with your blending, you're going to select both folders the same way you selected frames when moving your gifs. Then, you're going to click the layer dropdown menu up on the top and scroll until you get to the animation tab which has 'make frames' 'unmake frames' & 'merge' in it. You're going to select merge and you're done!
Just save it as a gif with whatever dimensions you want! And congratulations, you've made your blended gif !!!!!!

@lightasthesun requested a tutorial for how to create the colored outline effect on black and white gifs, so i am here! this was heavily inspired by @usergif’s wonderful tutorial for the same effect on photoshop, which you can find here. i am constantly in awe of the whole team over at usergif. they’re crazy talented.
onward!
so to start off, you first want to make and upload your gif to photopea, then sharpen, crop, and resize. i cover how to do all of this in my intro to photopea tutorial, which you can find here.
now that you’ve done this, you want to make a second copy of your gif. right-click (or two-fingered click for mac users) the gif folder in the workbar, then select “duplicate into”:
now choose “new project” as the destination and name it something fun and funky.
go back to your original gif. next up is coloring! you’ll want to do some very basic coloring here (i literally only did a levels layer), then add a black & white gradient map layer.
once you’ve finished your coloring, duplicate your coloring into your second gif by selecting all your coloring frames. click the first frame, then hold shift and click the last frame. you then want to right-click one of the frames, select “duplicate into”, then select your second gif. click okay.
now we have our black and white layer ready to go. in order to make your color layer, go into your second gif. select the gradient map layer, then adjust the coloring so that the map is black and whatever your color is (instead of white). you can do this by double-clicking the white rectangle on the gradient scale (it’s the highlighted red one in the image below) and then selecting your new color. i chose red. click okay.
now both our layers are done! export both gifs at 100% speed by going to file, then choosing “export as” and following through to “gif.” repeat for both gifs.
now- and this is super important- reupload both gifs to photopea. you can even close out of the two you had open if you’d like, although i would recommend leaving them up just in case you have a download/upload issue in the future. from here on out, i’m going to refer to the completed two gifs you just reuploaded as gifs one (b&w) and two (color).
go to your second gif (the color one). we now want to duplicate the color gif on top of the black & white one. select the folder in the work bar, then right-click, select “duplicate into”, and choose your b&w gif as the destination.
if you go to your b&w gif, you should now have your color gif on top. make sure you ONLY have gif frames and not adjustment frames, and that the gifs are in two separate folders in the same workstation, or else these next steps won’t work!
we’re almost done! next, you want to change the blending mode of the color gif. select its gif folder, then go to the blending mode dropdown just above it (it’ll likely say “pass through” or “normal”). scroll until you reach “lighten”, then select it.
you’re now going to move the color gif to form the outline. it’s VERY important that you make sure you have the arrow selected in the toolbar on the left (it’s at the top). select all of the frames in the color gif by clicking the top frame, then holding shift and clicking the bottom frame. use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the color gif a few pixels to the left or the right. i don’t have a picture for this step because it’s kind of hard to actually show, lol.
finally, you want to merge your two gifs into one gif. close both gif folders by clicking the arrows next to the eyes in the workbar, then select both as you’ve been selecting multiple things all throughout this tutorial. go to layer in the master menu, then scroll to “animation” and select “merge”. DON’T select “merge layers”. that only helps you if you’re not dealing with animation.
export gif, and you’re done! as ever, let me know if you have any questions!
guia photopea: x / x

/post/672502174884970496/joeypacey-an-exploration-a-four-part-playlist Hi,cloud! If you're still making photopea tutorials, could you show me how you made the gif switch in the first gif of this lovely set? Thank you, in advance!
Hi!!!!! Of course, I'm always happy to help!!!
You can find the tutorial under the cut
For that particular gif, I just recorded that whole scene and made it into one gif. So the shot of Pacey you see is just the camera cutting away from Joey to Pacey!
However, if you want a gif that looks like that but with scenes that aren't connected. All you have to do is make whatever two gifs you want and then duplicate one gif into the other. By right clicking on one of your gifs to open this menu and clicking the duplicate into option and then clicking on your other gif from the dropdown menu.
Once you have both gifs in the same project, you can just save them as a gif and you'll have a gif that looks like that gif!
But if you want a gif with a smoother transition like this gif from this post, you can use this tutorial by @/benoitblanc (they have a ton of other excellent photopea tutorials as well) to achieve that effect
CRYSTALLIZED GIF TRANSITION TUTORIAL for photopea
— adapted by kai @miwtual from @cal-kestis‘s original tutorial
it looks like we lost the ask, but an anon asked for a tutorial on how to do this crystallized gif effect (tutorial by @cal-kestis) in photopea, which i have done my best to explain in the following tutorial!
this tutorial requires:
photopea (free online photoshop)
basic giffing knowledge (check out our gif tutorials tag if you need to!)
some knowledge of how to blend gifs (tutorial here)
while this effect is a bit tedious to accomplish in photopea, it is still doable! just be patient and you’ll have a fun new transition under your sleeve :) <3
first step is to make your gifs that you are going to blend together. like what i said in the blending gifs tutorial here, you need to make sure your gifs are the same amount of frames so that they blend properly. here are my four gifs, two for each gif that we will be transitioning between:
much like the original tutorial, we have one gif that is black and white and another gif that is all one solid color. i tried to mimic what was done in the original tutorial for this one, but feel free to play around with your gifs for the effect you want to achieve.
now, in a new canvas, take two of your gifs that you’re going to blend and put them on this canvas. since we’re in photopea, we will have to work with our frames individually to achieve the crystallize effect.
to do this effect, open up your black and white gif’s folder and scroll to the bottom. i typically use the first 3 to 5 frames for the transition, depending on how many frames are in the gif; since this gif is going to be 25 frames, i’ll do the effect to the first 3 frames and last 2 frames of each gif. please note that you need to apply your crystallized effects to the frames BEFORE merging the gifs into one in order to achieve similar results to the original tutorial.
in order to achieve the crystallized effect in photopea, go to filter > pixellate > crystallize for each frame you want to apply the effect to. for the black and white gif, i set the crystallize effect to 15px, and for the pink gif, i set it to 10px. you can change the numbers to what you’d like for your gifs to look like, but i like the way that the blend looks with these settings!
now i will change the blending mode for both gifs to lighten and merge them together by going to layer > animation > merge. after merging, i then apply the oil paint effect to each of the frames that are crystallized (it’s still tedious this way, but less so, trust me). to achieve the oil paint effect, go to filter > stylize > oil paint. here are my settings (which are essentially the same as the original tutorial):
below are the two gifs before and after the crystallize/oil paint effect:
repeat this process for the gif you’re going to be transitioning to.
now we can make another canvas in order to have the full gif, transition and all! make your canvas and put your crystallized gifs on it. you can add whatever typography you’d like over top of your gifs, and then you should save your gif (and make sure it’s below 10MB for tumblr; if it’s not, this site helps lower file sizes of gifs without taking away the quality!).
and viola! you have successfully made a crystallized gif transition in photopea! sorry to the anon whose ask we lost, but hopefully you see this tutorial and it helps you out! :) <3
