“My particular definition of mind will be that it is the seething morass of cell circuitry that has been configured by personal experiences and is constantly being updated as we live out each moment.”
– Susan Greenfield, from The Private Life of the Brain.
Our planet is poorly equipped for delight.
One must snatch gladness from the days that are.
In this life
it's not difficult to die.
To make life
is more difficult by far.
Why do we blush when we're embarrassed?
So let’s start off by asking why do we blush at all? It turns out that blushing is a part of our bodies “fight or flight” system. It is a completely involuntary response, and is triggered when our body sends out adrenaline (usually in some type of emergency), which dilates the blood vessels in our face, specifically our cheeks and increases the blood flow in the outer part of our face, turning our cheeks red.
That part makes sense right? So what evolutionary advantage could blushing when we are embarrassed could there be? Well unfortunately we can ever really know for sure, however many psychologists believe that it is in fact to actually AVOID a conflict or confrontation. Much like how some animals do, like cats putting their ears down, tucking their tails, or dogs and wolves rolling over and exposing their bellies. It’s a way of saying “Sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you”.
