“As a lifelong NY Phil fan and family member (courtesy of parents who took me to concerts before I was an age most would find acceptable to bring children to NY Phil concerts), today is a big day for me. I will be bringing my grandmother with me to #PhilTheHall for her first NY Phil and first @LincolnCenter experience. She moved to NYC in 1959 and proceeded to raise 9 children (many of whom later attended @cunyedu — and whose grandchildren would nearly all attend @cunyedu for either undergrad or grad school) with my grandfather on a single salary. Sure, ‘times were different’ and perhaps ‘cost less’ but raising 9 children involves a hefty sum no matter the year and ensuring they were always dressed well and fed and able to do/try things often meant my grandparents went without. For my grandmother in particular this is true. So today’s outing together, along with mom, our taking an @mtanyctransit express bus into the city, walking along @centralparknyc and making our way to @LincolnCenter for her first NY Phil performance is a big moment — for her, for me, for us, & I am so grateful we get to share this. As I get older, and the fragility and preciousness of time become all the more palpable, the times I get to spend with my mother and grandmother (and my loved ones in general) are all the more special.
