Hoeing out a little garden plot and unearthed this big fat grub. Beheaded it so it wouldn't escape or suffer as much, and gifted it to this Pheidole colony.
Not too much of a sense of scale in this photo, but the grub is a little bit smaller than my thumb.
Very amusing to come back to them later and see the colony has shifted fully into GATHER THE FOOD mode, with many ants busy working away at the grub and a separate long trail of hundreds of ants going off away from the grub to fetch grass seeds—their typical fare.
scouts from the Green Headed Ant colony keep approaching the grub but are quickly chased off by these hungry little Pheidole ladies
they seem to be running a defensive perimeter around the grub, possibly for just that very reason of fending off other ants. As you can see in the photo, for as many ants as there are on the grub, there are just as many running around aimlessly on the sand.
Sometimes their big headed sisters would pop out of the nest, walk a lap around the grub with shocked body-language (if you'll forgive some shameless anthropomorphism), and then dart back inside. Possibly fetching other majors idk
So fascinating to watch ants at work. Doing so today has unearthed a deep desire I wasn't expecting: I really really really want to play Age of Empires again...
