He took a deep breath before getting out of the cargo plane. Looking over at Ava, she seemed a bit nervous too. He knew it wasn't from working with him, they did missions together all the time and this was just recon. Her new suit was scaring her he thought. At the tower, if something went wrong Kara was right there, they had a system to lock down the room she was in to make it like her cube but out here, there wasn't much he could do.

Reaching out, and not caring what anyone thought, he squeezed her hand. "Hey you're gonna be fine. We're gonna check these fuckers out. See what they are up to and then go home. Easy day. He was using the voice he learned to help ease people and he knew it usually worked on her too. I'm right here. I've got you."

"...hey, didn't I seen you on TV one time?"

Normally the subway wouldn't be a good place for a confrontation. Tight quarters, the possibility of other passengers getting in the way and causing a ruckus. Every once in a while, though, Xue likes to take public transit for specifically those reasons.

Things in Chinatown have been good! She's ahead on rent, she's starting to get recognized by people on the street, and the hooligans and thugs that used to hang around have largely found other places to haunt. That's good for her - means she's getting real work done. It's bad for her because she's been really bored. Boredom, incidentally, being what led her to taking rumours of bag-snatchers and gangsters into her own hands. This line has a stop in Chinatown, so it could be like her turf, right?

She realizes she still has someone's collar in one fist, and the other cocked back to add to the compound skull fracture she's already inflicted. Her hand opens, and she lets him drop, wincing slightly as the back of his head bounces off the handrail.

John didn't startle this time, like he had been waiting for it. Only the faint twitch of his shoulders gave him away.

He was slouched behind the half-demolished bar --you'd think Valentina would have gotten to it by now, he thought irritably-- back against the cracked counter, one of his long legs stretched out like it hurt to keep it bent. The bottle resting against his thigh was half empty.

"Trying something new," he said after a beat, voice low and rough with fatigue. "Figured enough of this shit might knock me out eventually. No dice."

He nodded at the cabinet-- mostly shattered glass and rubble half-covered with tarps, though a few bottles had miraculously survived. "Bar's still open," he added, the ghost of a smirk tugging at his mouth as he lazily waved the whiskey bottle in Ava's direction. "If you don't mind sharing."
