Laird Mackintosh as Raoul
Souvenir programme - Special New Collectors Edition, Pantages programme, and insert, ca. 1995-96
As Ruthie II crashes for the final time, Canada’s own Laird Mackintosh will be stepping in to the role of The Phantom for its final performance on Broadway. Dug up these artifacts in celebration.

A 1995 Toronto playbill with an insert of Doug LaBrecque going on as The Phantom. He played Raoul in Toronto, though I am not sure whether he was was principle or understudy, even the playbill collections don’t show much in terms of him. I do know there is an audio recording of him from 1998 with Ethan Freeman so he was likely in the show to some capacity for a few years. Mid 90′s programs from Toronto are nearly impossible to find (heck, there’s alot more original cast or Colm Wilkinson ones), and 1996-early 1998 I have legit never seen and don’t know the understudies (it’s driven me crazy for years)
Anyway this was a neat find, there is also a video (so shaky it might as well just listen to it) of his Music of the Night on YouTube and he sounds really nice!
Me and Paul Clemens with Peter Karrie in Phantom costume, backstage at the Pantages in Toronto, 1998. I look so very happy in that second photo! Because it was my honeymoon. And other reasons. Hahaha.
Honestly I’ve been finding it hard to stop thinking about Peter since his livestream concert last weekend. I’m amazed his voice is still so strong, and I loved all the videos sent in by people he’d worked with sharing memories (including Phantoms like John Owen-Jones and Mike Sterling, plus John Barrowman talking about mooning and flashing Peter in his dressing room back in Her Majesty’s...!). And damn is Peter still extremely hot for 74. IMO.

BOO! IT’S PAUL STANLEY!
I’m dating myself, but this was the lead cast when I saw the Phantom as a kid on a family trip to Toronto: Glenda Balkan as Christine, Ciaran Sheehan as the Phantom, and Laird Mackintosh as Raoul. And yes, I still have the ticket stub!
Who/where was your first Phantom?
Lovely cast photos are courtesy of @operafantomet; ticket stub photo is my own.
So I found this on Rebecca Caine's facebook
