If you're a veteran of the blog (or at least have been following the August 2024 reposts), you'll have noticed that I've posted or written articles about Bettie Page and the bondage she popularized as a model. It's a long story short, as I'd say, about how that model, whose body isn't standard or canonical but is very charismatic, reminds me of someone, who brings fetishes that were previously very rare and hidden into pop and fashion. It's all about phantasmagoria, curiosity, and the fact that these travel and spread as part of the culture they are, but I don't want to go on too long…

But why are we talking about this? Well, because before the advent of adult films in the 20th century, stimulating fiction relied on short stories, novels, and a few eye-catching illustrations. Playboy was born during this time and always included a bit of sensual narrative (but not too much, and still very vanilla). Its offerings were added to the already existing supply of moralistic novels, which, the more vulgar and on the editorial fringe, the more risqué and sensationalist they were, even though it was illegal to be explicit. But the demand for stories with photo or drawn references was enormous. The market was expanding in the US, where they once had an entire informal subgenre of cheap novels about wicked lesbians that (almost) forever perverted upright, marriageable girls. I'm not making this stuff up!

Pero ¿Por qué hablamos de esto? Pues porque antes de nacer los filmes para adultos en el siglo, las ficciones estimulantes dependían de relatos, novelas y escasas ilustraciones llamativas. Playboy nace en estos tiempos e incluye siempre un poco de narrativa sensual (pero no demasiado y sí muy vainilla). Se suma su oferta a la ya existente en noveluchas moralistas que cuanto más malas y en la periferia editorial, más subidas de tono y sensacionalistas eran aunque fuera ilegal ser explícitas. Pero la demanda de historias con referentes en foto o dibujados es enorme. El mercado se expande en EEUU, donde llegaron a tener todo un subgénero informal de novelitas baratas de lesbianas malvadas que (casi) pervertían para siempre a chicas rectas y casaderas ¡No me invento estas cosas!

But let me tell it as it was, not as the editors said it was: gentlemen we would call anti-woke today easily found magazines with flashy covers that told made-up stories sold as non-fiction, featuring lots of women tied up and interrogated by the evil. Are you getting it?

Y en estos mercados que buscan más sugerir y poder distribuirse mejor para vender más (y no haber penas de cárcel) aparecen revistas para hombres que no han de esconderse (tanto) en el quiosco porque son revistas para caballeros aguerridos, sobre todo veteranos de guerra, que entre otros contenidos y artículos varios, encontraban narraciones de otros veteranos y reconstrucciones novelizadas de hazañas varias. Pero deja que lo cuente como era y no como decían los editores que era aquello: señores que hoy llamaríamos anti woke encuentran fácil con llamativas portadas revistas que contaban historias inventadas que vendían como no ficción donde había mucha mujer atada e interrogada por los malvados ¿Lo vais pillando?

La era de estas revistas acabó según fue siendo legal, común y fácil de encontrar la pornografía tal como la conocemos ahora. Y estas revistas como las películas sobre colonias nudistas o bañistas perseguidas por monstruo cutre fueron siendo desplazadas hasta desparecer. Pero durante sus años dejaron un legado en imágenes exageradas hasta el absurdo de científicos malvados, nazis torturados y musculosos rescatadores de damas con poca ropa. @spaceintruderdetector localizó hace un tiempo el libro que editó sobre ello Adam Parfrey, un emprendedor editorial de todo lo extraño del mundo y la cultura pop angloparlante que pudiera encontrar. I saved those words months ago and even published them last year without elaborating on how they relate to my thinking; it occurred to me to do so now.

La cita que pudisteis leer antes del salto de Seguir leyendo es la típica excusa intelectual de apoyarse en gente más asentada y reputada citando algo suyo antes de lo que vienes a contar tú. Guardé esas palabras hace meses e incluso las publiqué el año pasado sin desarrollar en qué se relacionan con mi pensamiento, se me ha ocurrido hacerlo ahora.

I don't want to delve into the etymology of the French term "fantasmagorie" from which it originates, because I don't fully follow the Spanish dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), which defines it as the art of representing optical illusions (something from the performing arts from the birth of cinema as another similar technique) and, in a more modern sense used outside the world of entertainment, a deception (intentional or otherwise) of the senses and/or intelligence. The way I use the word, it is still related to art and culture. And I'm not talking about something real, either, because there's no material basis or direct relationship—if anything, a symbolic one—between the phantasmagoria and the portion of reality it affects or governs. Put like that, it sounds complicated, right? But what is a country if not a general phantasmagoria in our civilizations?

No deseo profundizar en la etimología del término francés 'fantasmagorie' que le da origen, porque yo no sigo del todo lo recogido en el diccionario español de la RAE; donde se dice que es el arte de representar ilusiones ópticas (algo de artes escénicas de cuando nace el cine como otra técnica similar) y, en un significado de uso más moderno y fuera del mundo del espectáculo, un engaño (intencional o) no a los sentidos y/o a la inteligencia. En la forma en la que yo uso la palabra no deja de tener su relación con arte y cultura. Y tampoco hablo con ello de algo real, porque no existe una base material o una relación directa, si acaso simbólica entre la fantasmagoría y la porción de realidad que esta afecta o rige. Dicho así les suena complicado ¿verdad? pero ¿Qué es un país sino una fantasmagoría general en nuestras civilizaciones?

A country has a name, milestones, and famous personalities; and it justifies its existence through pure custom, generally from centuries of what we call history, and through the fact that it contains people who often share common things like a language and culinary recipes. But the lines on maps don't exist outside of them; languages aren't only within those imaginary lines, and they cross borders, settling in other places, although they don't travel as far as fashions or recipes do. The more you examine the idea of a country in detail, the less sense it makes beyond being a historical vice brought about by random conditions that happened over time. I'm not telling you all this to advocate for nations to disappear from the earth. These have governments and services, they have operational and practical functions materialized from consensus accepting their phantasmagoria and if it is already difficult to reach an agreement in the community of neighbors, imagine what a mess it would be to restart them.

Un país tiene nombre, hitos y personalidades famosas propias; y justifica su existencia en la pura costumbre, generalmente durante siglos en lo que llamamos Historia, y en el hecho de contener gente que suelen compartir cosas comunes como un idioma y recetas culinarias. Pero no existen las líneas de los mapas fuera de estos, los idiomas no están solo al interior de esas líneas imaginarias y cruzan fronteras asentándose en otros lugares aunque no viajan tanto como las modas o las recetas de cocina. Cuanto más examinas al detalle la idea de país menos sentido tienen más allá de ser vicio histórico venido por unas condiciones azarosas que fueron sucediéndose. No os cuento todo esto por defender que desaparezcan las naciones de la tierra. Estas tienen gobiernos y servicios, tienen unas funciones operativas y prácticas materializadas desde el consenso aceptando su fantasmagoría y si ya es difícil ponerse de acuerdo en la comunidad de vecinos, imaginad que lío sería reiniciarlas.

My sole intention was to present something that no one would doubt is real, but devoid of any meaning in the material world that would make it what it is, unequivocally or definitively. Countries are political realities marked only on maps; therefore, their borders are social conventions and the product of consensus (or the axe-wielding of those who disagreed). They are no less present than physical realities, but chance, among many other things, influenced their existence as they are. For example, Brazil as we know it depended on a second royal marriage. No one will deny that Brazil exists or that stockings can be sexy. But do they necessarily have to be that way? Does something about nylon hypnotize or magically provide that erotic power? We're talking about cultural phenomena whose existence has depended on a long history of events and coincidences, on so much consensus and repetition within a culture that it has survived to this day.

No están menos presentes que las realidades físicas, pero influyó el azar entre muchas más cosas para que fueran y fueran como son. Por ejemplo, dependió de un segundo matrimonio en la realeza que existiese Brasil como la conocemos. Nadie va a negar que exista Brasil o que las medias puedan ser sexy. Detecting phantasmagoria, deciphering their codes and their origin, if possible, seems like a fascinating journey to me. For me, Tumblr is like going into the jungle, searching for phantasmagoria to catalog and study like butterflies. That's why this blog is called Phantasmagoria Safari. In the US, until the late 1970s, automobile production was a powerful private economic engine for the country. The establishment of suburbs (residential developments far from the city center) made it almost essential to travel by car to work or go shopping, and this was further emphasized by the then-new shopping malls, now in decline, and movie theaters outside the city (not the cheap drive-ins of yesteryear, but luxurious theaters with prices to match). Cars became an increasing necessity and a staple of the middle classes. Then, owning a second car became popular, allowing the housewife to be independent without depending on the family car. The pursuit of consumerism, fueled by advertising and capitalism, which linked owning cars with freedom, style, and personality, also made them desirable for the children of the family. The more they spent, the better, and the better. The ease of buying used vehicles and the price of gasoline were incomprehensible to a European woman accustomed to cities that retain centuries-old streets with their narrow layout (the ease of parking there also strikes me as alien).

For all this and capitalist market logic, generating product variations for all types of consumers made sense; and that included popular brand models designed for girls and what they understood they liked in those years of even cheaper gasoline and continued economic prosperity.
