I wonder if they know what it was like to grow up in the endless rice fields of the north, where the wind is never too shy, where the sky seems to touch the earth and the sun shines wherever you go. I wonder if they know how it felt when he met the first and only doctor in their village, how his speaking voice made him calm down, how the first shots didn’t seem painful at all because he was confident in what he was doing. And so this barefoot kid starts to dream. Big, bold, out of this world dreams that seemed so impossible amidst the endless rice fields. But his heart knew no limit. He buried his head in his books, he stayed awake until dawn, he read until he couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore. And this wasn’t a secret for long because it started to show and it started to bare fruit. Wearing his best clothes, he marches on to the capital region, enrolls in one of the top medical schools in the country and repeats the same process again. He kept his fire alive with the thought of that singular doctor who saved so many lives in his village. He kept imagining the day he could do the same. 

I wonder if they know how bittersweet those years were; how he carefully stayed between hating and loving the one thing he dreamt about for so many years. How a week’s worth of bone-deep weary disappears when a patient comes up to him to thank him for everything he did. It was all worth it, he thinks as he says, “ “...So long as I maintain this Oath faithfully and without corruption, may it be granted to me to partake of life fully and the practice of my art, gaining the respect of all men for all time. However, should I transgress this Oath and violate it, may the opposite be my fate....”.

Do no harm, he promises. And so he goes through this journey like that. He went to the mountains, he lead his own clinic. The little barefoot kid became what his idol was like. He served the under-served in the far-fetched places. Maybe, somewhere in that crowd, a little barefoot kid watches and starts dreaming too. 

Then he lead interns, and his co-residents. The joy he felt when he heard of the news that he got into one of the most prestigious fellowship programs in their country was indescribable. He was there, and yet also, almost there. 

And then, 

And then just like that, it’s all gone. 

All the patients he could have seen, all the interns and residents he could have led, all the fellows he could have trained, all the little barefoot kids he could have inspired to become just like him,
