Do you remember the exam I was sure I failed? The essay when I had the flu? Results came out today.
I passed.
Preparing to be pulled back to Gen Med wards as an attending because of fourth surge or whatever we’re on now, and this is where we’re at.
I’ve spent so much time advising people over the phone to talk tylenol and ibuprofen postoperatively that I’m getting ads for freakin tylenol in my twitter feed.Â
So many answering service calls this weekend.Â
“What are you taking for pain?”
“Nothing”
“Ok, please take 1000mg of tylenol three times a day and 600mg of ibuprofen 4 times a day (alternating)”
“I don’t have those but I’m having a lot of pain”
... ok go get them
“why am I having pain?”
Dude... you had surgery...
“why am I having so much pain?”Â
We literally counseled you that this surgery was going to cause severe pain lasting two weeks and that the recovery is absolutely terrible (this particular surgery gets oxy on top of tyl/ibu)
I promise I am empathetic and kind on the phone but the number of times I had this conversation this weekend was mind numbing.
Editing a case report, working on my CLABSI talk, reviewing infection control cases, prepping for meetings. Gotta have something to amp me up.

Was at a friend’s birthday party yesterday and got the inevitable, “Oh you’re an ER doctor? What’s the worst thing you’ve seen?”
and as per usual I immediately think of the day when we had 6 GSWs, 3 of whom were dead on arrival, 2 of whom got thoracotomies and none of whom survived, all of whom were younger than I am.
But that’s not really a fun fact so I said something about the recent case of nec fasc diagnosed from the waiting room (which is like...definitely also not the kind of story he was looking for, and more just representative of how awful EM is right now, but was the best I could do)
I hate it when tests aren't consistent. I've been doing some old practice multiple choice exams - decent amounts of questions, at least 100 at a time - and the results I get are wild.
On Tuesday I got 74% and yesterday I got 47%. These are both previous exams from the psychiatry college. The very same place produced each exam one year apart. How is that possible?!
Anyway...
My supervisor has told me I can lock myself in a clinic room today and just practice writing essays for the essay exam on Tuesday. She is also still out with a respiratory illness though so I think she's slightly more optimistic than I am given there won't be any other doctors in the entire clinic today.
We will see!
Aaaaand 10:30am and I’m back home from work after 2.5 hours as I’ve been told I’m now covering a week of nights starting tonight.
Sigh.
If they told you all this before you signed up, no one would ever end up doing medicine.
