Cellar Times Are Fun Times By Sil C. Step. 5, 2017
It was my 2nd week of my freshman year in high school. I was so bored when school got out, but one of my friends at the time told me about a cool place to go to called The Cellar. He told me where it was, the First Presbyterian Church in Downtown not far from where we were. We walked on down and I saw this cafe like place inside. We had fun, I met more people, saw some cool high school bands during their open mic night, and chowed down on free food on Thursday for dinner and discussion. Over the years I’m still there, hanging with friends and just having so much fun. It’s run by two awesome people, April Mae and Katie Peffer, they do everything they can to make this space so much fun and welcoming for others. And yes, it is a safe space, but one of the coolest places ever. If you’re a teenager that goes to school in Downtown Pittsburgh, you gotta check it out. With cheap food at the cost of literally a quarter, it's perfect for every broke teen. In other news, there will be an upcoming interview with Ryan Hartman of Surf Bored, and host of Sick Sad World on WPTS Radio. Art from local artists at Pittsburgh CAPA. Another interview with Portrait People, a Pittsburgh curb stomp pop band who I saw live. Lastly events at the cellar! That’s right OMEpgh will have a gallery to check out in the far future. House Shows or Bust? By, Sil C. Sep. 4, 2017
On a late afternoon, I was with my brother Rowan, a Pittsburgh artist such as myself. He was telling me about his grand scheme about starting a memorial show for Neutral Milk Hotel’s Airplane Over The Sea for its 20th birthday in February. As we were sitting in The O, Pittsburgh’s Original hot dog shop, he checked out this house show that was happening at The Bushnel in North Oakland. Now, I have never gone to a house show before. I’ve always wanted to go, but I’ve been burnt out from work most of the time. So, there we were, at The Bushnel jamming out, having a great time. It was called “The Back to School Bash.” The line up was Portrait People, Pinstripe Sunny, Surf bored, and other local artists (links to their works are at the bottom).  Everyone there was very nice and friendly. I made new friends and talked to people about my ideas as an artist. They shared theirs too. The groups that played were outstanding. Stu, if you are reading, thank you so much, that was one hell of a show! I can’t wait for more in the future. If you are new to Pittsburgh’s DIY scene, either you’re not from here, or you wanna get into it. Go to a house show, or a DIY venue, such as The Mr. Roboto Project or others. Trust me; the experience of listening to live music, meeting people, and having a blast, is just wonderful.
