Hamilton became the cause of his first inkling that even Washington was not perfect. Except for Washington himself, Hamilton had become Lafayette's closest friend in the American army. The marquis had singled out Hamilton for special mention in his last letter to Adrienne. Washington's aide was, he told her, 'a man whom I love very much.' Hamilton had failed to receive any of the several distinguished appointments which had been available, though Lafayette had urged him upon both Washington and Congress on several occasions.
