The Petty Tyrant
âAny encounter with a petty tyrant, even a small one is damaging and offensive for ordinary people. However, what really finishes us off is not so much any real damage inflicted but a feeling offense and humiliation that arises from taking ourselves too seriously. If we examine the petty tyrants in our lives, we should ask what damage they really cause us. A sober observation will reveal that the real enemy is within ourselves. It is our self-importance that is poking us inside when we find ourselves in a situation that is disagreeable to the ego. A warrior could suffer physical damage but would in no way be offended by the actions of a petty tyrant. A warrior could be struck physically but would not feel humiliated. This extra energy not spent on self-importance is precisely the advantage the warrior has over the petty tyrant, whose principal characteristicâand weak pointâis taking him or herself with deadly seriousness. With this extra energy a warrior maintains strategy, control, and the ability to observe, then places traps and waits. The warrior triumphs in the end, having achieved the tempering of his or her spirit.â
