America’s unconventional shale oil and gas production boom has been credited with producing more than half a million jobs. The ability of oil and gas exploration companies to extract energy resources from these once hard-to-reach places has had a resounding and lasting impact on many a small community.

The Bakken oil fields, responsible for North Dakota’s uncharacteristically swift population burst, have created many employment opportunities. Recently, in the Williston area, the unemployment rate was reported to be as little as 1% (by comparison, the rest of the United States is hovering at about 8%), and job openings outnumbered the unemployed by the staggering count of 10 to one.

While the environmental impact of the current American oil boom may not yet be clear (the fracking debate is definitely a hot-button issue), and there is always the risk of spills, locals are touting the fact that unskilled workers are in many cases now bringing home upwards of $60,000 a year. As with any boom, it may not last, and time will tell whether the environmental tradeoffs will be worth the short-term gains.
