The knock on your door came just as you were trying to wrangle your new puppy off the sofa.

“Hold on!” you called, laughing as the little ball of fur wiggled out of your arms and darted toward the door. “You’re supposed to be the cute one, not the chaotic one!”

The puppy barked once high-pitched and proud just as you opened the door to find Fred Weasley standing there, windblown and grinning.

“Well, if it isn’t my favorite Slytherin,” he said, leaning against the doorframe. “Or are you too posh for me now that you’ve got your own house?”

You rolled your eyes. “Come in before you freeze.”

He stepped inside, shaking a bit of snow from his hair, and immediately froze. His eyes widened. There, sitting proudly at his feet, was your new puppy all floppy ears, wagging tail, and pure excitement.

“Bloody hell,” Fred whispered. “You didn’t tell me you got a dog!”

You grinned. “Surprise.”

Fred crouched down, holding out a hand. The puppy sniffed it once before launching into his lap with zero hesitation, tail wagging furiously.

“Well, that’s it,” Fred said, laughing as the pup licked his chin. “I’m never leaving.”

You crossed your arms, amused. “Pretty sure he’s just using you for attention.”

Fred looked up at you with mock offense. “I’ll have you know I’m excellent with dogs. Right, little bloke?” He scratched behind the puppy’s ears, who promptly melted into a puddle of bliss.

“See? We’re best mates already.”

You smiled, watching the way his face softened that mischievous glint in his eyes giving way to something gentler. “His name’s Jasper,” you said quietly. “I got him from the shelter last week.”

Fred looked up again, and the grin faded into something warm. “That’s brilliant, Y/N. He’s lucky to have you.”

You felt your cheeks warm. “You think so?”

“I know so,” Fred said simply. He stood, the puppy still in his arms, and added with a smirk, “Though, I can’t decide who’s cuter him or you.”

You scoffed, trying (and failing) not to smile. “You’re ridiculous.”

He shrugged, eyes glinting. “Maybe. But the dog likes me, and that’s clearly the only opinion that matters.”

“Hmm.” You tapped your chin thoughtfully. “He also tried to eat a slipper this morning, so his judgment is questionable.”

Fred laughed, and the sound filled the room like sunshine. The puppy barked again, tail wagging furiously between you two.

Fred looked down at Jasper, then back at you. “He’s not the only one excited to see you, you know.”

You blinked. “What?”

He grinned, holding your gaze. “Nothing. Just saying I might start visiting more often.”
