Peter was one of her closest friends. The irony, which came from being in two separate gangs, wasn’t lost upon the girl. But, she had always found the company of the boy who never grew up comforting-- she felt as if Peter was someone who was always there for her. 

But, lately, something had been feeling a little off. 

He was always a feisty guy, and he could return whatever attitude Angel gave him easily, and yet, her quips were falling flat around him, almost as if she was getting nervous. 

Angel had no idea why that could be. 

Perhaps, it was the way he wore his hair, or how he made stupid jokes, or how he would do anything for his friends. Perhaps it was his mischievous smile, or his secretly kind heart. 

Perhaps it was just who he was. 

Angel had begun to feel something was different, and it made her mind reel with anxiety. Was it possible? To be in love with one of her best friends? The answer was something she couldn’t manage to grasp. 

What set it off, however, was just a smile. One stupid, goofy smile he gave her while they were hanging out, and suddenly, Angel was all too aware of what it meant for her. Fuck. But, she couldn’t say anything. She didn’t want to mess it all up.

Pacifica had found Peter odd from the moment she met him, but everything and everyone good in her life had been odd so she welcomed it. Before she might have mocked, bullied him, but in Emporia she was trying to accept people and befriend them despite her families standards for what made a good friend. They didn’t immediately click, it all started out over a span of time. They’d see each other and speak, then not again until weeks later. It was a slow development, but one day things somehow shifted. Their conversations became more frequent, and Pacifica had to admit she enjoyed the strange boys company.

She learned the boy was adventurous, something she always enjoyed but never went after herself. Her emptiness disappeared when she was around Peter, he made her smile and laugh and have hope for the world. She didn’t know what it was about him, but it made her feel good inside.

She began to look forward to when the boy would text her in the late hours of the night to go on some little adventure. She loved when he’d take her with him somewhere, wanted her company, something about him made her feel special when he’d wanted to hang out with her. 

He was far from the standards her parents held for the people Pacifica should spend her time with, and even she was a bit wary in times of the boy. Their time together felt so temporary, she felt like he could turn and find someone else to hang out with whenever he’d like and leave Paz in the dust. Why was she so scared of him leaving her though? She knew everyone left eventually, if not she would leave them, but this was different. She worried every time they were out together, and she began to think what was it that made her feel so scared he’d leave her.
