The Mourning Exhibition opened on 28th July 1983, closed on its opening day by 'public bodies' and was henceforth banned.
Photographer Peter Timar spent three years documenting how the dead is treated in Budapest. He wanted to show how the past and present is significantly different - from respecting the deceased to something colder and industrial, something less humane, due to changing rules and laws. His stark black and white photos are shocking and thought-provoking.
"Only in Budapest every year, or 34,000 people are buried, that is, one hundred, one hundred and twenty dead a day. It is clear, therefore, that there is a large gap between centuries-old burial habits in villages, small towns, human, human traditions, and services that are swollen into an industrial activity. Liar cynicism is to say that the dead is no longer the case. It can be subjected to an ineffective machine in many cases, without hindrance. "(PĂ©ter TĂmár's text from 1983.
