August 2, 1967 - John and Cynthia in a boat on a river photographed by Peter Sandeman. After their return from a holiday in Greece John, Cynthia and Julian went down to Bournemouth to relax for a few days at Mimi's home🌻🌻🌻
Nick Churchill (Dorset Life Magazine, 2006): 'When John wasn't lounging on the beach or relaxing on the terrace overlooking the harbour, he loved boating and would take a trip up the River Frome to Wareham in a small boat belonging to a neighbour, Peter Sandeman, whose landlady told Mimi he had a boat that John could use.'🎍
Peter Sandeman: "John was a couple of years younger than me and not really the type of person I liked, but my wife Pamela, who was my girlfriend at the time, loved the Beatles. The first line of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, 'Imagine yourself in a boat on a river,' is from the time when John and I were friends, sailing around in my little cruiser, taking pictures on the river."🪷
"We went up the river Frome to a place called Wareham where we stopped at a pub. We were having lunch and after about three-quarters-of-an-hour the landlady said, 'are you John Lennon?' He said no and she said 'well, you look like him and all those people out there think you do as well. We turned around, looked out of the window and saw all these people screaming’ and we thought ‘oh no’🌵
So Cynthia and my then fiancee went out and got the boat ready and then John and I jumped on the boat. As we left all these fans were trying to chase us in the water! That was my only encounter with Beatlemania. [John] kept apologising because he thought fans would rip things off the boat. He said he was going to buy a boat and I could captain it. He even offered me one of his discs he had on his wall, but I said no. He was a super chap. I would say he was happy and sad. Happy with his life and sad he could not use it." ~ Peter Sandeman🌸
