Seeing rabbit owners do their yearly shaming of people who get Easter bunnies, it's okay to get a rabbit on Easter lol I got my pet rats because rats are popular online.
It's okay to want a pet for what ever reason if you have the money, room, supplies and time to get them and isn't a splurge purchase and are being acquired from a reputable source.
There are genuine people who want small pets out there and have the resources but get shamed by small pet owners.
Tbh I think saying "Exotics belong in the wild, not as pets" is a bit harsh? Somebody keeping a pet tarantula or a corn snake isn't on the same level as somebody who keeps a "hot" snake like a cobra, or those people who keep big cats. As long as they're not dangerous, and you can offer them a good life in captivity, I don't see anything wrong with keeping exotics. "Exotic" is such a broad term after all, I think even guinea pigs count as exotic! In short: A tree frog✔️ A cougar❌
there are other people more qualified to hash out exactly what can and can't ethically be kept as a pet, and I agree things like tarantulas and corn snakes are fine! (as long as they weren't taken from the wild)
but with a statement like that it's easier to just err on the side of caution with so many Cute Pet videos out there of things like bush babies and slow lorises that have zero business being in human homes, and trust people to sort out the specifics themselves.
To each their own but man, people who hate cats are really living in some fantasy world where dogs only have one (1) personality trait and are the only animal capable of love.

Might post some in-memoriam pictures of Wookie later, she was an indoor-outdoor cat for all roughly 17 years of her life, the same as Alfie, who got to somewhere over twenty and Bobs who got to like. 15?? I think? He died before I was born and was a pretty sickly cat but still had a decently long life.
Rant Time:
Anyways so: I like in the semi-countryside in the UK and our house backs onto a moor and we're surrounded by farms. Our cats are generally pretty safe going outside and we've done so with all our cats for all of their lives as long as they've wanted to go out. We are considerate when the weather is bad and we don't force them out, they come and go as they like, and let us know whenever they want to come in or out by Y E L L I N
In all seriousness only one of our cats has ever been injured, it was wookie, who cut her back paw on a bit of glass, once, years ago. It did not stop her from wanting to go out and it did not stop us from letting her out. She died of old age a couple of months ago, and she lived a full and happy life with our family, and I won't take blind criticism of the way that we treat the cats who are our family, nor will I take the insinuation that I somehow don't love them enough to look after them.
I normally debate people pretty civilly when they approach me because I don't mind disagreeing and arguing politely, it's a way of learning about other people's perspectives and being more considerate of others and their lives, but I'm not here so a random person, probably from a different country can tell me I don't deserve to own pets with absolutely no context and the implication being that I treat them badly. If you want to talk about concerns you have, message me. Don't insult me and my family and run off.

Is there something more to it than intuition, or preference about how you’d like to live?

Like, where else would they come from?  I guess some of them have intermediate steps---”I’d like to be able to play piano, therefore I will practice piano” is distinct from “I’d like to practice piano”---but the only place “should”s can come from is preferences about the life you want.Â
