You walk into a closed-up room and immediately notice that the air feels stale. Rodents often prefer locations that provide darkness and protection.

Behind cabinets, inside wall cavities, under flooring and around stored equipment can all become potential nesting areas. These locations are difficult to inspect during ordinary cleaning.

An unusual smell can sometimes provide an early clue, particularly when it repeatedly comes from the same concealed location. Droppings, shredded material and gnaw marks provide additional evidence.

Why Airflow Matters

Ventilation plays an important role when dealing with enclosed areas affected by rodents.

A room that has remained closed for a long period should be approached carefully, especially when there are obvious signs of infestation. Creating unnecessary dust or disturbing contaminated material can increase exposure.

Cleaning should therefore focus on controlled disinfection and careful removal rather than aggressive sweeping.

Prevention Starts With the Source

Improving indoor air quality alone will not solve a rodent problem.

The source of the contamination needs to be addressed. Inspecting possible entry points, removing accessible food, improving waste management and reducing clutter can discourage rodents from establishing nests.
