Here is a serious problem I have with my former Evangelical background. A friend just posted an article by a speaker saying “the two biggest lies” are that “everyone is good” and that “there is no hell.”
That’s a whole huge theological question I’m not going to debate here. But THIS is my problem. Whenever Evangelicals mention hell, they do so with a snotty, prideful self-assurance that it has no application to them personally and is only a motivator for them to go out and try to preach to/convert all those “poor unsaved” people. (Which includes everybody pretty much who doesn’t think like them.)
Here’s the problem. If you want to have both parts of that theology, you should balance it with things that tell you to look at yourself and your flaws and faults first. (“Judge not” and “take the plank out of your own eye” etc etc.) Not to create some later of ever-present fear over hell for you (been there, lived through that, anxiety disorders + borderline Fundamentalist Xity are a terrible combination.) But basically just get off your fucking high horse and talking about doctrines that you don’t think apply to you at all and focus on the WEALTH of Scripture that you think fucking does apply to you before you even think about talking to anyone else about your religion.
Go start with the book of James and Matthew 25 (which connects an image of “hell” btw with care of the poor and oppressed, NOT with believing the right things, but you conveniently ignore that passage) or pretty much any of the teachings of…y’know…Jesus.
Basically look at yourself first instead of always preaching about doctrines that you don’t really believe apply to you anymore because you’re saved/straight/financially secure/whatever other bullshit. And if you have to think of it this way—I think you’d bring a lot of other people around to religion because these things might prevent you from being arrogant assholes and the type of person that normal people don’t want to be around.
/end rant
