Pietro Perugino, Portrait of a Young Man, c. 1480, Uffizi ..
attributo a Pieto Vannucci detto Perugino, San Sebastian, ca. 1495
Mum asked me to find the name and artist of a painting she saw on TV that she really liked; the painting is Delivery Of The Keys by Perugino, a fresco you can find in the Sistine Chapel next time you’re passing through.
She is annoyed that the keys are allegorical, which I can sympathize with.
[ID: Two images; left is a detail of the fresco, which shows St. Peter kneeling in front of Jesus, accepting a pair of keys, with a domed building behind them. Right, a text message exchange between myself and my mother. She says “Where’s the door that the key fits into? Is it that middle building?” and I reply “The wikipedia article says the keys are the power to forgive and to share the word of God. They are not for St. Peter to let himself into heaven but so he can let others in.” My mother replies (the relevant part), “Disappointing that there is no door or lock.” I respond “Well the building behind them is the Dome of the Rock, it definitely represents heaven on some level! But yes sadly they are not the keys to Jesus’s car.”]
