Personal Brand Monitoring | Stay in Control Online
Stay in control of your online image with personal brand monitoring. Keep track of what people see about you online, manage reviews, and respond to feedback effectively. With the right approach, you can build a strong, trustworthy identity and create a positive impression that supports your personal and professional growth.
You are the product and how well you maintain it is up to you.
We all care about how we present ourselves to the world. For instances when you wake up in the morning you brush your teeth, wash your face and put on clean clothes so that you look presentable before the world sees you. This is exactly the kind of effort and approach your personal brand requires because you’re selling yourself! Every post you share, comment on or like, your followers and others will make judgements about what you are promoting and whether it aligns with how you’ve established your personal brand. Unlike your appearance, where you can change it if you don’t like it, what you post online or how you react to it stays with you forever. Â
As students we should be astutely aware of the potential implications of our online actions. For example, if you go to an interview and tell the hiring manager you know all about branding and how to use digital platforms. Then the hiring manager Googles you, only to find out that you have not developed your personal brand the way you said you did on your resume this reflects negatively against you, the product you’re trying to sell (oh and you probably won’t get the job). Moral of the story is that when people Google you, they should be able to find content that represents you and is relevant to them. Â
Some examples of personal brand monitoring tools are WordPress a place for your own personal blog and Hootsuite, where you can have multiple social media networks in one central hub to help manage the content you post.Â
Online reputation management is something you are responsible for managing. You’ve invested all this time into building your personal brand (i.e. social media accounts, sharing content, creating content etc) the last thing you want to become lazy and stop creating or curating content or let a negative comment tarnish your brand. There’s a famous quote by an investor known as Warren Buffett: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently”. Right? With that in mind you want to maintain trust and credibility by remaining consistent because the minute you go off brand the product (which is you) won’t hold the same credibility it initially stood for. In turn it will be hard to recover new followers because you’ve lost the following and engagement. As students we have started the process of building our personal brand and we need to make every effort to be consistent and watch out for the reviews of our content that we create and share with our audience.Â
An example of online reputation management is Google alerts that help keep a look for any mentions of your brand and notifies you of it. Staying on top of your own brand and managing it will help sustain you in the long run.Â
