I appreciate people who point out my mistakes in a kind and constructive way! I don’t take offense on that. You’re free to tell me, “Hey, Walt, you misconstrued me on this point,” or “I don’t agree with what you said because _____.”
Yesterday, I tweeted something. And I was corrected about it.
See, my country has a LOT of languages, to the point that one word can mean X in this place, while in another language, in different region, it means B. Totally different. But that’s how it is in the Philippines.
So I was confused, when I saw this Word that says it’s X. Because to me, in my place, it was a B. So my tweet voiced out my confusion, and I admit, I was slightly peeved that people thought it was X when I knew that it was B.
But I did take a step back, reevaluated, and there, I realised, oh, it’s possible that That Word could mean something else in a different language.
Fortunately, someone corrected me, confirming this thought. So, yes, That Word is X in a different language. But That Word is also B, in my language. Both languages and definitions are valid. (Confusing, but that’s fine.)
So I made (3) public apologies for this, saying I’m sorry I assumed that it was “only B” by definition. But now, I acknowledge that X is also just as real and as valid a definition to That Word. I owed up to my mistakes. And I know it would be easy if I deleted it, but the thing is, I want Filipinos to learn and not forget that there are many languages in the Philippines. Because, apparently, I am not the only one who thinks “That Word is B only.” As a matter of fact, a lot of people thought it was only B, until corrected. So that’s telling, right? That’s how many languages we have, that we aren’t even aware of the others, besides the dominant Tagalog language. So, as a native speaker of Tagalog, this experience is a call-out to be more sensitive to other Philippine languages. I accepted my mistake, apologised for it, and am now careful.
But to keep imposing my mistake, even when I’ve apologised, more than once? Just... what are you trying to get at? I know I’m wrong. I said sorry. I owed up to my mistake. What else do I need to do?
And it’s not like I made a homophobic or transphobic or racist or sexist tweet. I did not make a harmful tweet. It wasn’t life-threatening. Yet, Some Person made it sound like it’s damn big deal when it’s really just a misunderstanding. And I understand it now! Thank you!
But, no. Suddenly, Some Person implies that I do not do my research before posting. Excuse me??? I think that was... a bit overboard. You can criticize me for what I said/ post, and you are free to point out my mistakes. But to straight up tell me, to research before posting? Assuming that I do not do it in the first place?
As a matter of fact, I did search it up before posting. And guess what? Definition B is really the more popular definition. I’m so sorry I relied on Google. Maybe next time, I’ll ask a native! UwU
I believe I did a proper apology. Thrice. Can we move on now? To more socially-relevant issues rather than the meaning of this and that? Thanks.
