Do you go to Queens?(I was on the Queens Uni tag) I was considering applying in Sept but I didn't know if moving from the Mainland(South Wales) would be recommended, is it expensive? awkward? Would love to know x
I'm gonna put this under a read more because I've said a lot.
Hey anon! I do indeed go to Queen's, and I actually had the same things to consider when I was applying since I come from the Mainland too (North West England). The biggest problem that you face is travel. Getting all of your things over there is a pretty difficult task. Luckily, I lived close to a ferry port, so I was able to take a car over to Belfast with my family. Unless you're willing to pay the amount to take a lot of luggage over by plane (if that's what you decide to do), then I believe that taking a ferry would be the easiest, and perhaps cheapest, option. I'm unaware of how close you are to Cardiff, but you can fly from there to Belfast City Airport quite easily, and the airport is around 15 minutes away from the University itself.
However, I do feel that moving from the Mainland is quite an adventurous thing to do. I personally love it here; it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Belfast is a beautiful and friendly city, and you'll probably find something that suits your interests. I'd say it was quite cheap here too - the most expensive aspect of coming here would be travel.
The accommodation isn't too either. The University-owned accommodation, Elms Village, is a ten minute walk from the University, and they charge £102.50 per week to live there (which you can pay back in various sums split over three or seven months). That price includes an en-suite bathroom, as well as your internet and electricity bills (it's like £82 without the bathroom). And you'll also be living with ten other people, meaning that you will make friends fairly quickly. (You don't have to live in this place though, but it is quite nice).
I've probably missed out on a lot of things that I could have said here, but I do feel as though Queen's is worth the application, especially for someone from the Mainland. I don't think I've met anyone Welsh as of yet, but I do know a lot of people from England. And if you do apply and decide to go to one of the Open Day's, the University will give you some money towards your travel if you put them as your first choice or something like that. Even if you don't end up going, you could make a nice day trip of it. :P
Well, I hope that has helped in some way. If I've missed something, or there are any other questions you would like to ask, then please do. Have a nice day/night! :)
