PERKIER launches gluten free porridge for Coeliacs!
Anyone who went to the Allergy & Free From shows last year can't help but have been impressed with Perk!er's bread and sweets. Since then they have rolled out shortbread and more delightful sweets (on sale in Whole Foods) - we love their Popping Tiffin!
So we were delighted when their latest press release dropped into our mailbox. Mmm what's this we wondered? The good news is that Perk!er are launching a totally new range of gluten free porridges*. As long term and newbie coeliacs alike will have realised there's very little good gluten free breakfast cereal on the market. Much of it tastes like sawdust. And very very little of it is fortified with nutrients and vitamins like mainstream cereal. Who knows why this is?! It's always baffled us as most Coeliacs are low in Vitamin D & Iron at diagnosis. Plus the very nature of the gluten free diet means that we don't eat as many foods containing Folic acid, Niacin and Thiamine unlike our mainstream buddies who will get this from the 'normal' cereal and bread they eat. But we digress into one of our pet rants...
Back to Perk!er news...
The lovely peeps at Perk!er have launched:
Gluten Free Porridge pots - ready in two minutes - just add hot water! (Apple Cinnamon & Raisen & Berry Flavour)
Gluten Free Boxed Porridges - 10 servings in each (Apple, cinnamon & raisin, Gingerbread & raisin, Fruity Berry)
These porridge pots are a great idea as you can take them to work and have breakfast at your desk, drag them along on camping trips, enjoy them at summer festivals. Handy and portable you need never go hungry again. When we had a recent unplanned stay in hospital we wished these had been available so we actually had something to eat in the mornings - instead of nothing as we were told there was only toast or cereal available. Which of course contain gluten d'oh. Hospitals take note - a variant of these gluten free porridge pots would be great for coeliac patients that can tolerate oats!
Coeliacs who can't eat Oats
For any Coeliacs that don't tolerate oats, (as the protein Avenin in them can cause a glutening reaction in some Coeliacs), they've even launched an oat free boxed 'porridge':
Oat Free Porridge product - Apple, cinnamon & raisin made with naturally gluten free millet & buckwheat flakes
Where & When can you grab these new goodies?
Perk!er have worked hard to make their new range accessible. So you'll now find it in not just one supermarket but four!
All of these supermarkets will be selling the new porridge range from the 1st March:
Goodness Direct
Whole Foods
Planet Organic
Ocado
So keep your eyes peeled and let us know what you think of them?
Enjoy Guerrillas!
*Gluten Free Porrdige Oats
This means that the Oats have not be packaged alongside other grains containing gluten i.e. care has been taken to avoid cross contamination with them. However, all Oats contain the protein Avenin and so should only be introduced slowly and carefully in line with advice from your dietitian or gastro Doctor as around 1 in 5 Coeliacs can experience glutening symptoms to the Avenin.
