Without the painful truths, there was no depth, there was no story. We could all easily view Perfect Lovers (Forever) in a still image and there would be no difference. In removing this conflict, what more do we lose? In this sense, I began to see how life is a tragic beauty. We do not necessarily need to live through the struggles of not being accepted in society or the pains of losing love, but if we live a life with no downs, how will we know how to live a life with highs of fighting for our beliefs or loving someone so fully that it feels truly perfect? As humans, we crave the disunity no matter how much we dislike it because, eventually, we will all reach our fulfilling resolutions to come full circle and start again with new discord.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres "Untitled" (Perfect Lovers) 1991 Medium Clocks, paint on wall Dimensions Overall 14 x 28 x 2 3/4" (35.6 x 71.2 x 7 cm) “Don’t be afraid of the clocks, they are our times, time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain time, therefore we give back credit where it is due: time. We are synchronized, now and forever. I love you.” The clocks become a bitter sweet metaphor for lovers. At first, it marks the time where everything between the two lovers is in sync, and at the same time, it is the reminder that the moment of absolute bliss with time fades, and the two lovers move farther and farther apart. However, the two clocks are always standing side by side, even if after decades they become hours apart. Sometimes however, batteries run out, and it is possible to once again set the two clocks at the same time. Between 1987 and 1990 artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres made an edition of 3 plus 1 artist’s proof of “Untitled” (Perfect Lovers)”, which consists of a identical pair of store-bought black-rimmed clocks. The piece was dedicated to his lover Ross Laycock, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991. In the same year Gonzalez-Torres created a white version of the work, which is owned by the MoMa, New York. The guidelines for how they should be arranged and displayed are the following: “When installed, the two clocks were to touch; the clocks could be replaced with white plastic commercial clocks of similar dimensions and design; the minute and second hands were to be set in sync, with the understanding that eventually they might go out of sync during the course of the exhibition; if one of the clocks needed the batteries replaced, it was to be done, and the clocks were to be reset accordingly; the clocks were to be displayed on a wall painted light blue.” #felixgonzaleztorres #perfectlovers (at Fitzroy, Victoria)
