Late November, Bellevue Botanical Garden main entrance & the Perennial Border Garden, starting to get ready for 2021. #fall #november #bellevuewa #ckcbellevue #perennialborder #bellevuebotanicalgarden #botanical #garden (at Bellevue Botanical Garden) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI80mnRgFIx/?igshid=9wc5a3fw7rdo
Honestly, I just went for mulch. Somehow, this beautiful mock orange shrub jumped into the truck. The only thing I regret is the very short bloom time. And buying only one. #mockorange #mockorangeblossom #cutflowers #perennialborder #cutflowerfarm #youpickflowerfarm #youpickflowers #iowaflowers #iowaflowerfarm #flowerfarmer #donahueiowa #misseffiesflowerfarm (at Miss Effie's Country Flowers and Garden Stuff) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx_FTqEAGT7/?igshid=1psegez26itru

Today I want to introduce another area of our garden to you. It’s the huge island bed in the center of our back garden.
Sitting on our porch we have a straight view on the island bed, which meanders in a huge organic shape around two old walnut trees. Behind it is our lawn and you can enjoy a relaxing view over fields and wild meadows. It is playing with borrowed landscape.
We started this bed off in the winter of 2015, by laying out the shape with bricks, removing the turf and adding fresh soil for a good plants growth. I can admit, that I had a general idea on how I envisioned the planting. I was aiming for a classic build up using perennials and ornamental grasses, with the higher plants in the center an the lower specimens at the front of the bed. The color scheme was based on light, pale and fresh colors, using blush, white and lavenders. As I didn’t do a proper planting plan, I started filling the gaps bit by bit and after two years I feel the planting doesn’t work for me.
It’s not a disaster, but there is a lot of room for improvement. All the ornamental grasses grew in really well, especially the Japanese blood grass ‘Red Baron’ (Imperata Cylindrica) is a show by end summer with it’s fiery red leafs next to the crimson pink Sedum. The photo above shows so well how the red grass is literally on fire, catching the light from the evening sun.  I especially love the rhythm of red with the rose hips right at the terrace and the same color repeating itself in the island bed. I feel this sort of million red is such a strong focal point, which draws your attention straight on it. I am determined to introduce more red tones into the island bed, especially for late summer.
