Working on my Honors Thesis paper about pop culture misconceptions of the gender and racial dynamics of the Salem Witch Trials while listening to the YouTube channel Gooba and Jetpackâs playlist of Nancy Drew music and typing ambience makes me feel like I am Professor Beatrice Hotchkiss working on a new book about Elinor Penvellyn, and thatâs all I want in life.
Nancy Drew Posthumous Characters || Favorite Penvellyns
Randulph Randulph the Red, so named for his bright red hair, was considered a hero at the Battle of Poitiers. For his heroism, King Edward III awarded him with the lands in the region called âPenvellynâ. Thatâs how we got our name. Milo Milo inherited not only his grandfatherâs red hair but his military prowess. Milo was instrumental in the Siege of Caen and was awarded even more lands by Henry V. Albert He was very mysterious and the people of Blackmoor were afraid of him because he knew all these scientific things. No one knows much about him, though. Charles Ooh, oohâ Charles was a very famous judge and wrote very important books on law. But his boy, Garrett, drowned when he was really young. Gillian She married the Duke of Balingsford, but she stayed at Blackmoor to raise her son, Thomas, who inherited the estate when his grandfather, Charles, died. James He never married but one day, when he was very old, a baby was found on the doorstep to the manor. He took her in and raised her as his own. That was Elinor. Elinor Just that she was burned as a witch but it wasnât true and her father, James, died when he saw her die and then the family fled to France. I donât want to talk about this. Colin Oh, this is so, so cool. They say he was a spy for England even though he lived in France. Isnât that so very? Iâd like to be a spy. Philippe He made a fortune in the New World and bought back most of the lands that were confiscated by Cromwell. Brigitte She was absolutely mad about cricketâthe game, not the insect. She actually saw the first cricket match in 1744. Personally, I canât stand the sport.
Arthur Penvellyn was a bandit in Diego Valdezâs gang. Thatâs pretty cool.
Just finished playing Curse of Blackmoor Manor with my boyfriend. After he saw all the shit built into the walls and trap doors, he was amazed the manor was still standing. If it was built on top of an alchemical lab from the 1400s, with puzzles constantly being added, the whole building must be constantly repaired and strengthened to not collapse on itself. He asked if every other generation had stonemasons and construction experts at all, cause if they're that uptight about the secrets then only they'd be allowed to know how to fix the house--or they'd have to kill anyone who fixed the building afterwards according to their fucked up beliefs about the useless space rock in the basement.
I found Ethel to be one of the more unnerving people in the game (Jane being the top one with her inclination for animal cruelty and poisoning her own stepmother without a moment's hesitation) and couldn't understand Ethel's devotion to the family or their dumb space rock. The poor Bossiny family, taught from birth to serve the Penvellyns til the end of time. Boyfriend said that was a very European mindset, and was less surprised by her antics.
We both agreed Linda should have divorced Hugh immediately after it came to light that Jane was poisoning her, and that Hugh was a failure of a parent for not getting Jane to therapy after the divorce. He himself admitted Jane was upset and not coping well with the divorce (like a normal 10 year old)...and Hugh didn't lift a finger to help her. Instead he dated and married Linda within two years, and then promptly was as absent a husband to her as he was an absent father to Jane.
