Root Issues
Sam was collecting manure when he "heard" that first painful twang across his senses. At this point, he had a decent enough connection to keep track of any magical shifts in the area. He usually recognized what energy entered and exited, whether he had summoned it or not.
But this was new, and it was notably unwell. Sam was going to need to take care of whatever it was, as soon as he was done with the set of chores in front of him. While he did so, he gently extended his consciousness outward, trying to get a better understanding of the issue. The size was human, and the energy was miserable, at a dangerously low ebb.
Sam hurried to saddle up Pete, stuffed a few bottles of water and electrolyte mix in the saddle pack, and grabbed a piece of shungite as well, to keep the poor soul from wandering away when he was being treated. Around here, it was easy for a lost soul to stay lost, and end up as another job for Sam to do. Best fix it before it started.
The closer he got, the more he could feel the humming in his mind. By the time he reached the stand of mesquite at the edge of the wash, there may as well have been a storm cell on top of it.
"Hey, man." Sam said, dismounting and hurrying towards the man with his rescue supplies. "Alright, let's get you fixed up, kay?"
