Pencarrow Lighthouse, Cook Strait views, and a rather confused Google Maps showed me cycling across the harbour channel!
Cook Strait views from Pencarrow across to the south island. The container ship - a floating city in the distance
Cycling from Eastbourne to Pencarrow on the eastern side of Wellington harbour, about 8km of gravel trail to the first lighthouse.

(from: http://www.ibiblio.org/lighthouse/nz.htm)
Pencarrow (2) (Pencarrow Sector)
1906. Active; focal plane 18 m (60 ft); three flashes, red or white depending on direction, every 12 s. 17 m (56 ft) octagonal concrete tower with lantern and gallery. Entire lighthouse painted white. Richard Mayston has a good closeup, Aidan Wojdas has a photo, Trabas has Thomas Philipp's photo, a photo showing both Pencarrow lighthouses is available, and Google has a satellite view. A 2009 photo shows that the lighthouse was repainted and refurbished in that year. Built as a steel skeletal tower, this lighthouse was encased in concrete during the 1930s. Located on the beach below the original lighthouse; accessible by bicycle or by a hike of about two hours one way from Burdans Gate on the Pencarrow Coastal Road south of Eastbourne. Site open, tower closed. Owner/operator: Greater Wellington Harbours. Site manager: East Harbour Regional Park. ARLHS NZL-039; Admiralty K4006; NGA 4588.
