BACK ON MY MASH BULLSHIT
Ok so in s8 e22 Dreams, BJ dreams that he and Peg are dancing through OR. Peg comes down and meets BJ in pre-OP, where several other couples are dancing away. BJ, like the other men, is wearing a white suit BUT unlike the other men, BJs bow tie and ascot are almost a garish plaid, instead of black. Peg is wearing a dress in a very different style from the other women and she is noticeably less fancy than the other women (much less jewelry etc). Her dress is also adorned with a large fake white flower, something none of the other women have.
Anyway, the entire episode revolves around how the war haunts each of the characters, but I think this specific dream also highlights how BJ and Peg were never the perfect American couple. They were close, and could fake it quite well, but something was always a bit off. Pegs large white flower represents a performative kind of purity the two put off, but at the end of the day, it was just that: fake.
