Being bummed out can be tough, but you can be your own savior. It’s so important to surround yourself with positive people and content, especially online, which can be a really difficult place to find peace. But once you are surrounded with voices telling you how to be less stressed and look after yourself, it gets a lot easier.
Be your own best friend. Enjoy your own company. Don’t depend on others to make you feel better. Learn how to have a me day; whether than means taking yourself on a date, spending the day getting those little tasks done or wrapping up and watching a cosy movie, learn how to do it and do it well! You’ll need to do it when you’re not feeling the best someday so it’s good to get the practice in early!
Just yesterday, I was having a bit of a downer day thinking an interview had gone horribly (spoiler: it didn’t!) so I took myself out on a date! I wandered around all of the fancy indoor supermarkets and the shops I couldn’t afford to shop in, even stumbling across Tiffany’s which I didn’t know was in Dublin! Nothing can cheer me up like pretending to be Audrey Hepburn getting rid of the mean reds in Tiffany’s! I then got to wander into Chanel and Hermes and all of the expensive makeup before seeing a sign saying “Christmas department on Level 3 (yes, we know it’s August). Seeing my first Christmas tree of the season just made me smile to myself.
I then took myself out to lunch and the staff were incredibly lovely (so much that I had to go onto their Facebook page and thank them formally!). After that I wandered to Lush and picked myself up a bubble bar (after debating between face masks and shampoos and deciding to save those purchases for another day). The staff in Lush are, of course, incredible too, and compliments always lift your spirits higher! After strolling through H&M and trying on many jumpers that I wasn’t living for and bumping into a friend, I found myself in Penneys falling head over heels for a beautiful yellow jumper.
Unfortunately, after trying it on, my black dress looked like a canary Halloween costume but my mum said to get it anyway and try work with it. It’s now the cutest item I own and for a very lovely €12 I figured I can always return it for a muted black so it matches all of my clothes anyway.
Even the Dart (train) breaking down on the way home couldn’t damped my spirits, and a cosy night watching Sherlock with my boyfriend topped it all off (him in his oversized hoodie, me in my canary jumper).
This may all sound terribly rambly but the point of it is to work to cheer yourself up. Even without spending all of that money, I could still have played dress up in Forever 21 (and put the clothes back myself to save the retail workers the hassle), sniffed every bath bomb in Lush and snapped a few cosy photos for my Instagram to perk myself up for free.
Be your own pick-me-up. Be your own savior. Be your own positivity.
