The ocean. What was once one of her favorite places in the world had now become a prison in which she was trapped for eternity. She used to love the water, having been compared by her friends to a fish when it came to her swimming ability. Now here she was, cursed with a damn scaly tail and seashells covering her breasts like the redheaded Disney princess as though this was some messed up version of undeserved bad karma. Unlike Ariel, this was far from a fairytale with a happy-go-lucky ending.
It was a living, breathing nightmare given to her by a vengeful, horrid inhuman whose son was killed by S.H.I.E.L.D. She was no longer the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who helped others, who tried to save the world...she was something quite different now. Surrounded on the Hawaiian islands by nothing but water and rainy seasons, the threat of becoming a permanent mermaid forever at the forefront of her thoughts, it was almost as though she could feel her heart growing colder.
Standing in the middle of the street, she cursed out her broken down car as thunder rumbled in the sky above her. She had only been walking for about a half mile to find the nearest place to call a tow truck, and she glanced up nervously at the looming storm that was quickly coming in. The hag’s curse echoed through her mind...water turned her back into a mermaid. The cursed ex-metahuman needed to get indoors as quickly as she could. If she stayed dry, she remained upright on two legs. She did not need to drop right there on the road with a damn green and black tail...it would certainly make for an interesting conversation with any passersby...and not one that would work out in Mel’s favor.
“Hotel...Mahalo...” With an out of breath sigh of relief, she jogged towards the lights up ahead and up the path until she reached the building just as the sky broke and the rains began to pour down behind her. “A-Aloha?” Calling out to the empty lobby, she winced as her leg began to itch. Glancing down, she took instant notice of the water drops that had gotten onto the skin of her thigh, a beautiful black and green scale popping up in their place. Crap. Pulling off her top tank top and leaving her undershirt on, she wrapped it around her leg before anyone could see it.
“Aloha? Anyone here?” she called again. “I need to use a phone, if I can! Please! My car broke down!”
