Diablo 2 - I want you to stay...a while and listen
Iām not sure how I feel about combining a Diablo quote and a Rhianna song but Iāve done it now. As you may have guessed today I want to talk about Diablo 2 - one of my favourite games from my childhood.Ā
There is a movement right now (it sounds more dramatic than it is) to make Diablo 2 great again - which is fantastic. Diablo 2 is a brilliant game...in my opinion. It doesnāt have the best graphics in the world and the story doesnāt exactly light the world on fire with creativity but what it does have is heart. Itās also one of the hardest games Iāve ever played. Think of a time before video games hand held you through a series of tutorials and instead threw you into the world with only the vaguest notion as to where to go and what skills to invest in. Of course now there is a vast range of websites telling you how to minĀ max your character but (and I hate to use this expression) back in the day there was only your own intuition. Subsequently I spent many frustrated hours putting points into inferno and wondering why I was struggling. I realise only fans will realise how that skill is bad but you get the idea.Ā
Itās hard to really put into words why itās a great game as it in essence quite similar to other dungeon crawler games, you kill monsters for loot and then kill more monsters to replace said loot for better pieces. I think itās Diablo 2ā²s tone that sets it apart, itās so dark and ominous that (and I am not ashamed to admit this) as a child I was actually a little scared to play it. The boss battles also had a weight to them that modern games seem to lack, as in you spent the whole act leading up to a big battle where you felt it actually seem to mean something.Ā
Another great factor is the music. It builds and puts you on edge to the point where your hair sticks up on your arms and you start jumping at shadows. Itās clear the Blizzard put a lot of time and energy into getting it just right and it creates an atmosphere that is sorely lacking in many modern titles.Ā
As I said at the beginning Diablo 2 is a brilliant game...in my opinion. It might seem a little dated now but if youāve never played it before I would whole heartedly advise you to try it, and if you have a copy somewhere gathering dust now more than ever is a great time to go back to the game, as I mentioned, this is a movement. This is a revolution.Ā
I would like to end by giving a shout out to MrLlamaSC who actually got me back into Diablo 2 again. He is a speed runner of the game and if youāre a fan of the Diablo series (apart from number 3 give him a watch).Ā Ā

Been playing Conan Exiles again, the server I was active on had a wipe which was useful for many reasons. On a personal level, I basically ran out of projects. They understandably have a plot limit (at least, a limit on foundations as to not make areas too laggy) and mine was extended for having a clan but a lot of my clanmates never logged on so I had a bunch of structures and ideas for RP events that just never happened. Eventually other game releases started getting my attention, such as AC: Odyssey was released around the time I stopped playing. Real quick interjection as a plug for the server I play on: https://www.exiles-erp.org/ It is an 18+ server with heavy ERP usage and sexual elements so consider that. The second reason the wipe was useful is that some patches and updates made the server incredibly buggy, and overall it just helped clean up. In practice, the admins do not want to wipe the server very often at all and they stay open as long as possible.Ā But Iām there as a new character and am having fun again. I am, however, having trouble finding new clanmates because everyone who is joining is pretty much coming prepackaged with clanmates or just suit other people better. Thereās two major clans in the jungle alongside me and I guess they just have betterĀ ādealsā than I do. Itās irritating that my concept just isnāt being considered. In other news, the Steam Winter Sale is live and Iām rather sad at my lack of sales on my wishlist. Most are only in the 20% range. I canāt give a first impressions on most but the list is thus; Portal Knights City of Brass Forged Battalion Zombie Builder Defense And the one Iām actually going to talk about; Thief Simulator. Did about an hour of it and I was wary because pure Sim games like this donāt tend to be all that fun, or just too difficult for me. Thankfully Thief Sim plays a little like an easier Payday 2.Ā You know that age-old conversation topic,Ā āIf you could get away with any crime, what would you do?ā Or some variant. Some rather disgusting people go with the darker aspects of the question, some are more mundane. Me? Iāve always had a fantasy of being a high class art thief or burglar. Thatās always been my go-to answer and this game fulfills a small part of that. I like the stealth genre for this very reason, and I love the AC franchise though it does go back and forth with the stealth. Syndicate had great stealth takeover side-activities but fastforward to Odyssey, I can basically rush in every game swinging a greataxe and just clean house. Iād like to have more finesse than that. Thief Sim certainly has some issues. It has some logical leaps of detection. If someone sees you carrying a printer or TV down the street, theyāll get suspicious. Simply drop the thing on the ground and wait while they patrol away, pick it up again and keep moving. Itās a rather silly timekiller and I wish the AI had a bit more finesse programmed into them. Ultimately I like the freeform that it offered me. After some initialĀ ātutorialā missions, mostly giving you the rundown of the basic mechanics and rundown for your computer and arsenal... At a certain point youāre pretty much free to do whatever. Right now Iām on aĀ āmainā mission to break someoneās toilet, but found a note in the house that had a pricey printer in it. So instead of messing with their toilet, I just started raiding these peopleās house a time or two. Itās a fairly large house and my backpack only has so much so itās taking a few trips to clean it up, meanwhile their toilet has remained unmolested. The game doesnāt mind, and now Iām probably going to explore other houses, get peopleās schedules and start doing my own thing to level up on my own terms. I like this very, very much.
