i have been thinking a long time about what jax's lamppost could represent and i have finally developed a bit of a theory surrounding it
of course there's the more obvious stuff like it being a reference to i saw the tv glow, though i haven't watched it so i can't say much in that regard,
and then the fact that jax was running away from home, on the streets, soon before she came to the circus. and multiple lampposts can be seen here
and. what i believe is. that the lamppost represents jax boxing herself in. rejecting herself, and not opening up to others. because that's what lamps do, they constrain light
and i believe this serves as a contrast to the stars we see throughout tadc.
the VERY first time jax genuinely opens up in the entire show, and actually expresses her true feelings about something, is during the stargazing adventure, where she tells pomni about how she actually feels about gangle and then also about ragatha. incidentally, there are also lampposts, shut off, in the background when she's talking about gangle here.
i think the stars represent the opposite thing that the lamppost does. i think the stars represent openness. stars are huge and burn openly and freely, with nothing restricting them. Jax is afraid to open her lamppost, to burn wholly and authentically, and so she keeps herself closed in.
here, ribbit kaufy and jax are in the same stargazing location as in untitled,
and then we see stars in the background of this adventure with ribbit and kaufmo,
but, the MAIN part i wanna talk about that i think is the strongest argument for this theory is of course the scene in ribbit's room.
their room is CLOAKED in stars, and it's the scene where jax opens up the most in the entire show by far.
here, i think it's meaningful how during + after jax is opening up, we literally see the stars covering her body since the stars are coming from a projector, and i just think thats really cool.
as well as this scene here, when ribbit places her bow on jax's head and we see ribbit from jax's perspective and she's just like. Genuinely glowing. with the star projector directly behind her. because she is who jax trusted the most, and the first person she's probably ever felt comfortable opening up to to this degree.
jax is Finally starting to let herself be vulnerable, let herself be authentic, let herself be the star that she is inside. but the scene is short lived, she throws the bow onto the ground, and crawls back into her shell to never leave again. ie, what the lamppost represents
i also want to mention that lampposts block out stars. enough of them cause light pollution, and prevent you from being able to see the cosmos, easily shown in jax's running away clip. (not a single star to be seen, lol)
and jax keeps clinging ON to that lamppost, unable to let go of it. unable to let go of that night she ran away. unable to let go of her trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms, unable to stop fearing vulnerability. it's why she abstracts. she refuses to let go of the things that hurt her, she refuses to accept the connection and love that the other humans offer to her time and time again
