Surface Design: RECOLORING PATTERN SWATCHES in ILLUSTRATOR
TO RECOLOR YOUR PATTERN SWATCH in AI, you must work with the ORIGINAL PATTERN SWATCH ARTWORK (WITH VECTORS!). To do so:
Select the Pattern you wish to RECOLOR and DRAG and DROP to the ARTBOARD.
Illustrator has created tiles to generate the repeat for this artwork, so you will need to use the MAGIC WAND to isolate the MOTIFS by color to be able to recolor for additional colorways.
Double-Click on the MAGIC WAND and decide which attributes you wish to sample (FILL/STROKE COLOR/STROKE WEIGHT/OPACITY). Be sure to set TOLERANCE to zero! Select the desired motifs and start RECOLORING!
Once you have recolored all the motifs, DRAG and DROP the RECOLORED PATTERN SWATCH back to the SWATCHES PANEL.
You may now fill your swatch with your second colorway.
