Hello, I hope I am not bothering you but I have had trouble finding information about this elsewhere so I thought you may know. What would happen to a Russian woman’s patronym and surname if she was to get married to someone who used the system of given name, middle name, surname? I mean in terms of addressed day to day but also legal documentation? Thank you in advance.
Mmm.... nothing much?
I mean, she would just change her surname.
Middle names and patronyms (names that are derived from your father) are not dependent on marriage whatsoever. So for both parties, those things wouldn't change.
But if both people decided to use a specific surname, that's what would happen!
Say, for example, an American married a Russian - or any nationality that uses patronyms - and they decided to use the American name.
That surname would be changed and... that's about it! Everything else would stay the same.
If Sasha got married and changed her surname, she would be Sasha Blorbo, and would be addressed as such in situations where surnames are used. Though in some instances, she may still be addressed as Sasha Ivanovna, because it's not like she would lose her patronym.
My own patronymic name is still on my passport alongside my surname, even though I basically never use it/write it anywhere within the US or Japan. It's still on the documents, it's just... hangin' out.
